Go with one drive with both installed while we they will coexist. When a
time comes that FCP or Avid needs a different version of OS or QT then
clone the HD to a separate drive or partition and go dual boot til it
blows over...

Having them both on the same partition makes using Compressor and Color
much
easier - no need to reboot.
As to keeping current with version releases - just don't upgrade one or
the
other if it creates an incompatibility.
