[Avid-L2] Re: 24p on consumer LCD

Not sure if you are talking about my post -- but the issue is that DX hardware transmits 23.976, 24 and 29.97 profiles -- as progressive segmented frame (PsF).

The HDMI specification does not support PsF and, not surprisingly, monitors can't ingest it. While Avid has resolved this issue in DX hardware by converting 29.97PsF to 59.94i at its HDMI port -- 23.976 and 24 will currently not work over HDMI (although Avid has discussed a possible future hardware and/or software fix to address this).

Until then, assuming it ever happens, to solve this problem, you might consider the AJA Hi5-3G or the AJA HDP2. Both devices take HD-SDI and unify PsF profiles back to their temporally coherent progressive formats. The Hi5 has an HDMI output, more support for higher bit-depth signals and a bit more control granularity -- and the HDP2 operates a bit more automatically and has a DVI out (which of course can be converted to HDMI with an inexpensive adapter).

Be forewarned that I have seen slight judder in 23.976 PsF and 24 PsF projects on some high-end Panasonic consumer monitors that are known and documented to support 23.976p and 24p. I've worked with AJA for some time now to diagnose the source of that judder -- but have not reached a resolution.

Hope that helps.
