The other part that was considered "groundbreaking" was that on set they had fully realized CG worlds when shooting. You could look in the finder and see the characters interacting with Pandora, not just green blocks or screens meant to represent geographical features that would be put in later.

Agreed. For one thing, it stays behind the screen. No objects popping out over the audience crap.

I think the biggest breakthrough with this movie had nothing to do with 3D. It was the amazing use of the motion capture / CG work. The actors came through so well that I found myself wondering how the heck they pulled it off. If it wasn't for the big eyes, I would have sworn all the close-ups were actors in makeup. It was that good.
Not like Polar Express where the people just looked freaky.
