it's pretty hard to call it "stealing" when the original owner still
has everything they once had. Inappropriate licensing or failure to
fill a business need is a business problem, not a legal one.
Economics 101, simply put, is that all goods will ultimately sell for
their marginal cost. Marginal cost of zero (digital goods) is a
reality that the industries need to adapt to. Lots of good examples
where musicians have created very successful new business models for
their music without the labels.
And the music business is doing absolutely great. The CD business, not
so much but that's more evidence of a failure to adapt to changing
business cirucmstances.
Piracy has so hurt the movie industry that it's once again had a
record revenue year.
This is not a simple topic for a five paragraph email but bottom line:
My work has been used without authorization and I've not bothered;
I've found our software for download on torrent sites and have done
nothing. I eat my own dog food.
Oh, people should be much more worried if there content isn't
distributed without authorization. You can never make money in
obscurity.
