That was a long time ago. Discreet bought Edit (DVision) and Paint which became Edit and Combustion. Both are now gone. Edit had some interesting real-time power, but used two different board set options (Matrox and Pinnacle, I think).

At the time the "real" Discreet editors were Fire and Smoke. The difference being which SGI hardware was used. Edit was eventually shut down and some of the developers (headquartered in Chicago) worked on Sony Xpri, IIRC. Since then Fire and Smoke have both moved to HP and Linux and AFAIK, there's no difference except the name plate. In fact, I'm not sure Autodesk even sells Fire units any longer. Interestingly enough, the exec running the Edit line at Discreet was Paul Lypaczewski, who now heads up Avid's Video Business Unit.

The bottom line is that Smoke is Autodesk's only edit product. You can also edit (sort of) with Flame, but Smoke is timeline-based while Flame is primarily node-based.
