To quote Bob Zelin "No Professional uses Firewire". Sure there are some required exceptions but capturing for offline is not one of them. If your serious about frame accuracy use RS-422 to control the deck even if you use firewire to get the video in.
I don't doubt you have a lot of experience with Firewire capture offset since time code is the lowest priority in the stream. So what is it drift or offset those are two different beasts? If changing the clip name solved the drift issue please send the necessary elements to Avid so they can reproduce and fix the bug.
