Re: [Avid-L2] OT: File Backup App (not for media)

Carbon Copy Cloner. Not the cheapest or the easiest, but I'm a big fan. The developer has been outstanding over the years maintaining a stable product and providing excellent support.

SuperDuper is the other old school, widely respected backup for Mac. Cheaper and a bit simpler, but when I tried it eons ago it couldn't do something I needed, I don't remember what that was.

These are traditional backup programs.

I use time Machine for my system drive, but only because it's super easy, and not for individual file history. For me, it's only a disaster recovery backup. If you really want it to work as designed for individual files, you need a very large backup drive, at least three times the expected primary size. If you have a lot of constantly changing, large files, as I do (video editor), you need a REALLY large drive because versioning wipes out older files too quickly to be of use. For this reason, I don't store large files on my system drive at all and I exclude all other drives from Time Machine.

I use Carbon Copy Cloner for everything else.

Re: [Avid-L2] OT: File Backup App (not for media)

I use CrashPlan Pro as a cloud backup. It's $10 per month per device for unlimited storage.

Additionally, I use ChronoSync to make backups of my Avid projects folder, et al. You can configure it to run a number of ways, but I have mine set to trigger a backup 5 minutes after it detects a filesystem change. This means that 5 minutes after I hit save, it makes a copy of whatever .avb files have changed since the last sync. I have it going to a folder on my Dropbox, and my Dropbox folder is also getting backed up to CrashPlan.

I also recently started using JottaCloud ($9.90/month) to test it out as an alternative to CrashPlan.

I've never used TimeMachine and don't plan to.

[Avid-L2] Deck Control with Blackmagic UltraStudio HD Mini

Upgrading to Mac M1, MC 2022.10 and a Blackmagic UltraStudio HD Mini for
I/O. Using a PDW-F1600 XDCAM deck.

Of course video, audio and deck control are flawless with BMD's software
(Media Express).

Avid sees audio and video -- but sees nothing for the deck. Deck
Configuration shows no ports on Direct.

Anyone know the secret sauce for getting Avid to play nice with the
UltraStudio??

Many thanks in advance.

[Avid-L2] Avid and BCC Title Studio?

Super novice in BCC Title Studio.  I have muscled my way to a two line lower third and sorted out the Shape Position to move the text to lower left corner with the text left justified.  I'm applying the drop shadow in the Controls Panal.  I set the composite Pos X to left and the Pos Y to bottom.  All this seems to play okay but when I duplicate the BCC effect for the next credit page and start retyping the text gets positioned back to the center of the frame and I have to manually re-enter Shape Postition Pos X and Pos Y.  I thought I was just typing over the existing text and I don't understand why it moves the newly typed text back to center screen.  Anybody understand the logic BCC Title Studio is using.  Again I'm novice so there may be something very basic I don't understand about the structure of this tool.

It's so nice to have to learn an interface that has the complexity of BCC Red/Avid fx when all I need it classic Title Tool functionality.

[Avid-L2] All current Artist I/O's are past their Final Sale Date, what's coming?

I came across some interesting information while exploring I/O options for a few new systems.  In Avid's January 4, 2023 End of Life document I found every one of the current I/O options to be past their Final Sale Date.

From:  https://www.avid.com/products/avid-artist-io
"Avid Artist I/O interfaces offer extensive HD and high-res format support across four interfaces—Avid Artist | DNxIQ, Avid Artist | DNxIV, new Avid Artist | DNxIP, and new Avid Artist | DNxID. This flexibility future-proofs your production, enabling you to work with today’s high-res formats, while supporting HD and SD too. You can also work with 2K or 4K media and deliver in HD with the onboard real-time down-converter, enabling you to transition to high-res at your own pace."

Has anyone heard anything about what new and/or revised I/O tech might be on the way?

Re: [Avid-L2] AAF with mixed sample rates?

I don't want to have an argument about sample rates. For anyone who really wants to get into the science and math behind this, I suggest the book "Signals and Systems" by Khalid Sayood. Dr. Sayood's explanation of things has definitely changed the way I look at almost everything. Happy 2023. JB

This is incorrect. The player should generate a waveform, no matter the amount of 'steps', since blockwaves don't exist in 'nature'.
The more samples per second, the higher of frequencies can be described, but input a wave, a wave comes out or you have a horrible out of spec player.

The higher the bit depth (Y axis) the more nuanced the loudness. JB

Also not true. A higher bit depth can describe lower volumes. (If you mean with 'nuanced' a  lower noise floor or higher dynamics, ok. But for the vast majority of mixed / finished sound, it is impossible to hear the difference between 16 and 24 bits.

There is a very nice video on the subject, I once found the link on JW soundgroup, but can't find it back anymore.

Re: [Avid-L2] AAF with mixed sample rates?

MC can do SR conversion on exporting AAF, but you have to check the box to request it.  It isn't the default behavior.

On export to Pro Tools, everything is converted to the project rate (if needed), so there is no reason to flag it.  The check box is still there if you want to convert to something other than your project rate.

Re: [Avid-L2] AAF with mixed sample rates?

Good info Jeffrey. I always assumed ProTools worked like MC and did SR conversion on fly.

That said, doesn't MC do an SR conversion when exporting an AAF? I've seen that on the progress bar for something...

Good test for .PTX export from MC -> Protools. Does SR get flagged in any way.

<Whinge>
I'd try it myself but
a. my MC perpetual has lapsed and there's no option to 'get current'
b. Even if I could get current, this new feature is not available to perpetual versions.

Re: [Avid-L2] AAF with mixed sample rates?

Picture a 2 axis graph. The horizontal axis is time, broken up into X thousands of divisions per second. The vertical axis is loudness, expressed as a numeric value. The more samples per second, the smoother and more detailed the waveform. The higher the bit depth (Y axis) the more nuanced the loudness. JB

If you don't delete the original audio, it stays in your bin and media files folders under the original name, without the ".converted". They aren't quarantined.

Re: [Avid-L2] AAF with mixed sample rates?

Pro tools plays all the audio at the session's sample rate, regardless of what the file says it is.  ("Project rate", in MC terminology.)  Since the session is 48K, the 44.1K audio would play sped up and pitched higher. I suspect that's why Media Composer has the warning, in order to reduce the number of angry phone calls the video editors get from the sound department.

The new "export Pro Tools Session" feature will always convert any media that's not at the project sample rate and build the session to refer to the converted media.

Re: [Avid-L2] AAF with mixed sample rates?

It worked like a champ.  I choose to delete original audio and I didn't have to relink anything.  I was pleasantly surprise mixed frame rate clips didn't require any special attention.  I know audio is sample based but having had to do the usual jumping through hoops with mixed frame rate clips on the video side I'm happy to report the audio side of those clips don't require the same tender loving care.

If I hadn't chosen to delete the original audio what would happen to the 44.1K audio clips?  Do they still live inside the avidmediafiles folder or would they be sequestered to some sort of quarantine folder?

Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.

It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share

information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for

professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to

share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no

better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of

informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the

group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users

Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy

Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery

for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at

the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,

Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.  In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true

international scope with over 300  international members. The community

included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate

organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,

as well as and  multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated

Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list.  The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Groups.io’s tools and will remain that way.

In 2019,  the Group has migrated to Groups,io from the previous Yahoo engine-   the Groups.io page  maintains the complete Avid-L2 archive.    The original Avid-L archive has been lost to the history of the interwebz.

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Re: [Avid-L2] Dell Precision 3660 Tower PCIe slot use

Dave,

I know your frustration with getting information from Dell.  I've spent close to 4 hours trying to track down the Thunderbolt 4 PCIe card that the Precision 3660 Tower spec sheet says exists.  I purchased this 3660T from the Dell Business Outlet but while researching I found the TB4 card even appears as an add-in board if you do a custom 3660T build.  However selecting that option throws a "restricted item" warning with no further information.

This experience has resulted in the submission for consideration of a new element to the periodic table.  It will follow right after "unobtanium" and "vaporwarium".   I've taken the liberty to name this new element "unknownium".   Whereas unobtanium represents a known element that simply can't be found, unknownium represents a nearly mythical element that exists only in vague textual references, similar to vaporwarium but with a lot less marketing hype and a lot more elusive.  No part number or product code is associated with unknownium.  No OEM department (sales, customer service, tech support) can verify its physical existence or even confirm knowledge of it.

For the time being at least I have an assortment of USB 3.2 Type-C Gen 2 (10 Gbps) and Gen 2x2 (20 Gbps) ports and external RAID storage compatible with that.

Cheers!

Re: [Avid-L2] Dell Precision 3660 Tower PCIe slot use

Karl –

What do you have to lose?

BTW, the last Dell I configured had the Thunderbolt turned off in the BIOS.  It was a pain to figure out – even Dell tech support didn't have a clue.

Thanx,

Subject: [Avid-L2] Dell Precision 3660 Tower PCIe slot use

Is anyone using a Dell Precision 3660 Tower along with an Avid DNX-IQ (or the BMD equivalent) with MC 2022.x?

I'm putting together such a system at the moment and am curious if anyone has installed the BMD PCIe cable kit in slot #1 of the 3660T instead of slot #3 as Avid recommends.  And, if so, whether you had any performance issues.

Slot #3, which is PCIe Gen 4, seems like overkill as the BMD PCIe I/O card is a PCIe Gen 3 device.  Slot #1 would appear to be better match as it is a PCIe Gen 3 slot.

Putting the BMD in slot #1 would allow me to leave slot #3 open for the Dell Thunderbolt 4 PCIe card, when and if it becomes available, for external storage.

Avid recommends slot #1 be used for Nexis shared storage with up to 40Gb support so I doubt there would be a data bandwidth issue with that slot/bus and the BMD card, but I'm certainly no expert.

I realize Avid would never have the time to test all possible configurations and I've got some spare time so I suppose I'll give it a try and see what results I get.

Feel free to chime in if you've gone down this path.

My dad always said, referring to his larger photographic equipment:

"...they put a handle on a rupture and call it a 'portable.' "

Portable is the descriptor HP uses for their laptop workstation line that's stuck with me.

Although for years through the XW and Z8## series of HP desktop workstations those did go on the road too.  They fit quite nicely in road cases built for Sony BVW/DVW units.  Moveable yes.  Portable... probably a stretch.  ;-)

By "portable workstations" do you mean laptops or is that a description of your entire mobile kit?

Hi Tod,

Thanks for your thoughts, they confirm my suppositions.  The portable workstation model is most certainly fitting my current editing needs at a price point that allows me at least 2 portables to the price of a single tower.

Re: [Avid-L2] CPU cores, speed, number of... diminishing returns?

Hey Greg,

I did briefly look at the AMD Threadripper option, but not in detail.  Time to dig a little deeper.

I am familiar with the HP Remarketing site.  I wish it was more user friendly for searching.  I never signed up for an email list, perhaps that's a better option.

Dell's version, their Business Outlet, has been my go-to over the past year.  The inventory is feature/model searchable and Dell has been VERY aggressive with their pricing.  Each of the four "refurbished" portable workstations I've purchased have arrived in brand new condition.  And (hopefully not to sound like a fanboy) Dell offers a ProSupport Plus plan (available 1 to 5 years) that includes next day service and accident damage coverage for about $125/yr.

I use the portable workstations on the road a lot (roughly 40 events a year) so that coverage is worth it.

Cheers!

Tod totally sums this up with a cool catchphrase!!

If you need peak power, you need a tower.

Boom! ^_^

Yes. Cores not CPUs. Multiple CPUs were made obsolete by high core counts. Cores are more efficient so a single multi-core is faster than dual CPUs with the same total cores. CPU codec acceleration, specifically h264 and 265 acceleration are also key. Almost all modern CPUs have this, and h264 is the most common camera codec. Mac M1s also have ProRes acceleration. I do not know the specifics of Media Composer's use of these accelerations, but they are critical to Premiere and Final Cut and have changed the power equation dramatically.

Are towers even necessary any more for routine file-based editing?

No, not really. There are two major reasons for towers: cooling and customization. Towers are built to be customized. However, both of these needs are becoming less important as CPUs get much cooler and systems become fundamentally more powerful and connectable, and therefor require less modification over time.

For example, I just purchased a Mac Studio. This box can't be modified, but it has more than enough horsepower to edit 4K video with aplomb, and with thunderbolt connections, add-ons are externalized. Is this the peak of performance? No. Is it more than enough for most editors? Yes.

If you need peak power, you need a tower. Otherwise, you don't really. That doesn't mean a tower is a bad idea. Towers can be more cost effective and are upgradable, so you can spend less now and upgrade later if needed. If you have the space and sound is not an issue, a tower may still be the way to go.

Re: [Avid-L2] CPU cores, speed, number of... diminishing returns?

I don't follow the latest info anymore, but I got an amazing year-end deal from Lenovo a few years back.  I'm mostly just a bum now, and mostly run Resolve when I have worked the last two years, but the AMD 'threadripper' based p620 has been a GREAT machine, even without considering the low price.  No thunderbolt, but I have a mac laptop for the rare occasion I need to copy media off a tbolt.

Alternatively, back when I had multiple edit bays and workstations, I was emailed the 'HP Remarketing' daily inventory.  Got great deals on a few killer machines (for their time) off that list over the years.  If you're not familiar, google around to find that and see if they have what you're looking for.

I've been shopping for a replacement Dell/HP tower workstation for a while now.  I've read the Avid specifications and recommendations and have explored a number of Good, Better, Best options.  CPU speed over core count is prominently stated.  The balancing equation of speed and core count is a gray area.  I've also noted a number of single CPU systems being certified.

I recently started using a Dell 7760 I9 11th Gen laptop for editing and find it performs surprisingly well for everyday HD file-based editing.  I just ordered a Dell 7770 I9 12th Gen with even more horsepower and will compare that to the 7760.

My gut tells me I would like a tower workstation for the main edit suite, that's what I've used since Adrenaline.   Yet, when I build a custom Dell or HP tower I feel as though I'm piecing together dated tech.  Surprisingly not a single major OEM is offering native Thunderbolt support in their towers, and their optional TB boards are behind the curve.  Nor will they divulge if/when they will offer native onboard TB support.  The tower CPU options also seem to be lagging behind those found in their laptops.

My questions are:

Have CPU's reached a performance point where a single is sufficient and a dual setup doesn't justify the cost in non-effects heavy post?

Are towers even necessary any more for routine file-based editing?
