[Avid-L2] Re: Resolve 12.5

I'm curious about Teranex in particular.  I don't run those boxes but in what I've heard from users of the current products and those of the pre Black Magic products it seemed like the cheaper Teranexs offered by Black Magic didn't perform as well as the older hardware units.  I'm not versed in their operation but it sure felt like yes they dropped the price but the features and quality dropped too for the users use to the older teranex product.  This is the impression I got in random conversations but do the Black Magic Teranex boxes off all the features of their predecessors.  Again I'm not a user of the products so I may be completely off the mark with what I have inferred over the past few years.  Please edjamacate me on this.

That's not entirely correct, because it puts the focus on price. Where BMD has acquired technologies, they have breathed significant new life into the products. Resolve 12.5 is completely different than the Resolve they acquired. Same is true of the Cintel scanner and the Teranex devices. Sure price gets dropped, but these products are also reimagined. Since they have amassed a large amount of IP, it is possible for them to cross-pollinate this technology across these formerly separate brands.

Resolve does not require the use of Blackmagic hardware.  However, you need Blackmagic hardware if you need any form of video I/O, which includes SDI- and HDMI-based monitoring on an external (and hopefully calibrated) display.  I would imagine that a number of users who are delivering for web-only don't own Blackmagic hardware -- or an external monitor.

I think this probably boils down to the kind of work one is doing.
Resolve is clearly an evolving platform, in terms of its NLE module.
I'm guessing closer parity with established NLEs will likely occur over the next couple releases.
However, the tool set today is more than enough for many types of projects and workflows.
And, as pointed out, Resolve does many things that Media Composer can't do -- and probably will never do ...
... not the least of which is being a modern and competent color corrector.

I wasn't aware of the need for BM hardware to run Resolve.  I don't have any and I run resolve just fine.  Well, I do have a thunderbolt box that takes the signal to my external monitor, but you can use practically anything for that.

To answer your question is simple, based on your target audience.

If you are finishing for web, probably you don't need more than the Avid color corrector.

If you are finishing for Broadcast Televison, Blu-ray or Feature Film release, you need a bigger toolbox than a stock Media Composer provides. Not just in tool sets including power windows, noise reduction, grain adjustments and the like, but in the bit depth and how color is processed. Avid does not do well in that arena.  Footage gets posterized and noisy when you have to push colors too far.

The facility I work at primarily uses dedicated color systems (Nucoda).  However in our promo work for film and television we use the color correction available in Flame, and Baselight inside AVID to get this done.

The only reason we aren't using resolve yet, is we don't have blackmagic hardware.  We primarily use Nitris DX and AJA i/o hardware.

You can bet, however, that the moment we go to Blackmagic hardware, we will be using resolve for our promo work, it's free!

Re: [Avid-L2] Exception:Audio/Video is unexpectedly no longer coming in the system

Recently had to capture from DigiBeta for the first time in years on my Nitris DX PC MC 8.5.2. Did not get it to work (errors soon after I hit the record button). Upgraded to 8.6 and then it worked.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Resolve 12.5

For me, it's my first step in dealing with RAW since Avid can't understand my camera's RAW data.  I also do end to end work, so Resolve comes in VERY handy.  Noise reduction is excellent too, so that helps.  Also, since I don't have pro-tools and Resolve understands most of my audio plugins, I get most of my audio work done there before jumping into Avid.

Just one data point.

[Avid-L2] Re: Running 7 streams of multigroup with Nexus 2 bonded 1GB ethernet connections?

Initially we were talking about a used Isis, not sure which model but some 7000 unit.  When I clicked on the performance guide for isis 7500 the document seemed to be for the 7000 according to the pages I looked at.  Now we are buying a new Nexus instead running with MacPro 12 core upgraded Mac Towers.  I'm not sure what the towers were before the upgrade to 12 core 3.33GH but I would guess mid 2010 units.  So it sounds like we will be okay and that we should be running OS 10.10.

We were also told the new Nexus, is that the EX?, that just came out last week is only approved for Avid 8.6.  Is that really true.  It sounds like we are jumping on a brand new storage system that differs from the Nexus 1000 as far as I know and now it requires the new Avid version that just came out as well.  I trust the storage but don't really like to be forced into 8.6 before it's had any real shake down by the users.  could we not run 8.5.3 or earlier.  I find it hard to believe Avid would come up with new storage solutions that drop the old versions compatibility.  I realize it's a tough dance with varying OS incompatibilities etc...  So where can I find the official document that tells me exactly what can work with the brand new Nexus units and do they have different requirements than the Nexus 1000 did?  I will google but if you can cut me to the chase that would be appreciated.  I'm going in for a root canal now and not sure how googlable I will be after the procedure so any guidance to keep it simple will help when I can't feel my face.  ;-)

John,

When using two Ethernet connection with ISIS/NEXIS we call this Avid Adaptive Load Balancing. It isn't technically bonding as each NIC has it's own IP address. But it does improve performance and reliability.

Are you using an ISIS|7500 or NEXIS? The performance characteristics are very different between the two and no one should conflate the two.

To ensure there won't be any issues we always add an additional stream for our multicam calculations.
So for a 6 x Multicam we would do the calculations for 7 Streams of DNx145; for the Video alone this is 126MB/s.   This should fit into a 2x1GigE connection without issue but there are a lot of details that I'd need to know to say for sure.

Please feel free to contact me off list or reply here.

Bob

Re: [Avid-L2] Exception:Audio/Video is unexpectedly no longer coming in the system

Capture tool is touchy without a stable video source, even if you're only recording audio. Try switching your video input to something that is stable - if you have no video coming in, choose an analog video if there is one available.
