[Avid-L2] Re: Why fcpx is bad for avid

True about adobe benjamin,

But if "we are to believe Apple, they are going to expand the functionality in
FCPX in the future." why don't they sell fcp 6 anymore? If the pro market is serious for them they would have given the pros a way to use version 6 or a good upgrade path to the future. These pro users don't want a solution they can use in a year, they make a living out of fcp TODAY and hopefully tomorrow. I think apple really changed there minds and want to be in another segment of the business. If some third party developers find a way to optimize it they are fine with it but that's it.
If you run a business you want to feel confident the investments you do will be in products of companies that are serious about your type of work in the long run. That's maybey the worst thing abou fcpx . You can't trust apple anymore.

Re: [Avid-L2] Why fcpx is bad for avid

I think (IMHO) Adobe provides a good counterweight to Avid in the absence of FCP and, if we are to believe Apple, they are going to expand the functionality in FCPX in the future. Honestly, I think some of the cool things that FCPX has will only inspire Avid and Adobe to continue to innovate.

But, hey Avid, don't go crazy with those interface changes. Simple and utilitarian is a good thing.

And, to the good folks at Avid, I'll gripe once again:
Can we please have the interface customizability we had in v4 and earlier?
I'd like to point out that one of the gripes I've seen mentioned about FCPX is the lack of interface customizability... so you see that editors in several camps feel the same way.

[Avid-L2] Why fcpx is bad for avid

First I want to say welcome to all fcp editors switching to Avid. My thoughts are with you and please share your knowledge with us. It's very sad apple turned there back to you professional users. It's also bad for Avid.

Avid was slowly changing to a company that is listening to it 's customers. It also changed his way of developing new tools without strange 'options' that you had to buy to make it work.

The most important reason they changed is because of FCP. It's very good for a company to have something to fight against. That' s over now so I cross my fingers they keep doing the right thing.

We have 7 suites of avid mc's and a few fcp suites we mostly use for finishing. Fcp is by far the most flexible and fast system compared to MC to complete finishing tasks.
Though I just can't edit a feature with it.

In my dreams I saw a fcp update like this;
-rebuild the trimming tool and some other editing tools
-rebuild the media managment
-rebuild the project /bins structure
- make it 64 bit
- add some I/o and import export options

Those improvments were very, very close and they could have killed avid and made me switch....

But they didn't....

In 2003, Adrenaline was introduced (May) and Meridien was killed (November), and from then on there was no 'regular' Xpress anymore, only Xpress Pro and Xpress DV, so I'm betting it was at least a little longer ago (I went from MC-Offline with Film Options to MC9000 in 2002).

Yes, those were the days of (expensive) feature packages. Resolutions, FX, film options, video I/O, audio I/O, a DV option...

[Avid-L2] Re: What will Avid do? [plug ins]

I remeber buying a xpress meridien system for online editing.
I was very happy I got rid of it within a year without much lost oninvestment.
This was in the days Avid had a horrible policy on buying 'features' to make the system work.
The hardware (optional) was the meridien box used by mc, a (optional) digidesign i/o box to get 8 ch audio i/o. It could do about the same as a mc system but you needed to buy (big money)
software options; was it avr 75or 77?, 2d or 3d fx, sdi uncompressed or not, etc.
All kinds of simple editing task were blocked and you needed to work around them.
I'm talking about maybey 8 years ago. Avid tranformed a lot since then but you see some of this stupid behaviour back if you look at the difference between mc and symphony. Secondary Color correction by example.
Why is it still not possible to do a dpx export with mc.??? If avid is smart they integrate some symphony/ds features into mc and let it work on more third party hardware and try to get a bigger audience to like there tools.

the "Fix" for that was to use Composer edit settings, not "new" Xpress ones.

The clip would open in a pop up - but it was possible to set up the
desktop such that you had a simulation of a source/record set up. We
used one for years. Was actually a pretty nice machine for the money.

And, as far as I can remember, didn't the Avid "Express" (the one before
Xpress Pro existed) also start out with just one "record" window, and
when you opened a clip it was in a "pop-up" monitor?

[Avid-L2] Re: What will Avid do? [plug ins]

Rupert,

I attended a five-day advanced Final Cut Studio 3 course, taught by
Larry Jordan in January, 2010. It took place at a Burbank-Based
for-profit professional editing education institution.

At that time, Mr. Jordan freely admitted to us he had *never* used an
Avid product. In fact, it was one of the first things he said to us.
The reason for this was he wanted us to know he'd be unable to
accurately answer certain "I do it this way in Avid. How do I do it in
Final Cut Pro?" questions. When asked why, in the face of a profession
that had multiple tool sets and a fluid workforce, he was not
cross-trained on other NLE's, Mr. Jordan's response was, to paraphrase:

"[Final Cut Pro is the only non-linear software I've ever used. I've
matured with it, and do not see the need to ever move away from it.]"

I thought that sentiment to be quite narrow-minded, given that every
other instructor I've ever studied with has been a certified trainer for
at least three of the four "A" NLE vendors (don't forget Autodesk) . . .
and even one that begins with Q.

FYI: Larry's bio is published on his website:
http://www.larryjordan.biz/larry-jordan/
