Enough already. The hot dog thread came and went about ten years ago. Time
to move on.

Now, they are bringing in in harddrives saying "it's all digitized!" Yeah, but in who knows what codec, from what camera, with how many files with duplicate names, because their camera starts every shoot with something like A000001.MOV

You do remember, Nick, when we had clients who would bring in tapes
by the dozen on hand trucks and in shopping carts.
That "huh?" answer applied to notes and timecode logs back then, too.

I've done that a lot too. I guess some of the 'old' techniques stay with us ;)

Pretty sure it's what Murch writes in In The Blink Of An Eye, but he was
talking about KEM's, where they would assemble their rushes in 10-min reels.

I'll admit having copied that technique. I create a sequence of all shots
and takes for a certain scene. I use that to watch the footage, and make
notes (add markers), and I use it later, flipping through the sequence to
quickly determine what's in there.

[Avid-L2] OT: Oki Dog Update just in time for the holiday break

The Oki Elfs have been busy and there are new wooden laminate table tops at Oki Dog.  The old orange tables are gone.  Only the old orange bench seats remain but in true Oki fashion the new table tops were place on top of the existing structure so now the tables feel a little on the high side.   There is also a new refrigerator display unit in the main dining area.  Empty now but I'm told it will be used for juices, and after 1 am a beer locker ;-).  At first glance at the new layout I was mortified to see the Pac Man game missing and in it''s place a "Force 2006 Megatouch" video card game.  I asked what happened and was told it was just moved to the other side of the room, whew!  Now back to dinner.

And subtract from that the number of those editors who are actually finishing shows, and you get an idea why the Symphony CC tool hasn't been significantly improved since it's inception in the last century.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: The "tape is dead" thread

You just pinpointed the main problem I have with digital delivery.

Laying off to tape used to be the last chance to watch the master through, catch
any errors, and pickup the edit after fixing them.

When I deliver digitally it's all copying files so you have to spend time
beforehand watching everything to make sure it's all good.

Then I want a file based deck. Something I can control from the edit bay, feed
it an SDI signal and be able to pick up along the way if I catch an error. I
haven't worked in an ISIS, Interplay environment but maybe some of this
functionality is there. I'm under the impression you take a completed sequence
and ship it of to the playback server thingy when done but it doesn't sound like
you can watch it as it goes off to the server. I just don't like surprises but
I guess I'll just have to go with the flow, work flow that is, when a file based
delivery comes my way.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: The "tape is dead" thread

Eventually yes but I'm not sure how soon. I'm doing a lot of work in-house at
various cable networks and all of our series and movies come to use via HDCAM or
SR.

Where you are correct is that when we deliver promos we don't usually deliver on
tape anymore.

But I think it will be a while before these massive tape libraries I go thru
every day will disappear.

That, too, will soon go away. There are already networks accepting file-based
delivery. Many have already adopted that internally if not for outside
suppliers. This trend will continue, because the network bean-counters will
increasingly refuse to cough up the cash to repair/replace dying decks.
Especially if they get used less and less in daily operations.

Note that they pinpoint the number of jobs as in the 25,000-28,000 range in the
US. Magnify this by a few times that for worldwide numbers. So, it's easy to see
that the actual number of professional editors is a meer fraction of the
millions of cumulative licenses claimed by the desktop NLE manufacturers.

Think of that the next time you ponder why some features make it and others are
