[Avid-L2] Saving seq in Symphony 4 takes 4ever

hey all in the borg. i'm sitting on a newly installed Symphony 4, and
we're putting it through it's paces

is there any reason why it would take several minutes to save the seq
after capture? this gets annoying while batch capturing, stopping to
switch decks, then wait for save, then conitnue..

is there a list of how to optimize the Winxp or Symph settings?

thanks,
marc

[Avid-L2] OT: Does anybody shoot pushes and pulls anymore?

I remember the days of shuttling through field tapes on 3/4 and I could always find a usable zoom in or zoom out.  It really wasn't that difficult IIRC.  Since I'm doing more online these days I'm always butting my head against the static shot that someone has put a move on, to give it a little life etc...  Don't people shoot zoom ins and outs anymore?  I find it hard to believe they don't exist on the field tapes and if they do why aren't they used in my final online sequence?  I find the moves forced on these shots rival the image quality of maybe a squeeze zoom or the A-51 image quality.  I know I need to order another case of "shut up" and just keep shoveling but really what's the deal?  Is it time to borrow Bob's shot gun?  But do I go postal on the camera folks or the offline guys or both?  Man I need a nap.  Hey you cameramen get off my yard!!!!  ;-)

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Install MC on a new partition, same computer

Raj,

I have a MCSOFT in front of me that was running on a temp 4.0 license
recently and it was just updated to a permanent SW license. I can open
the projects from that trial period and all the legacy projects.

I frequently set up customer systems with a trial SW license until
dongle updaters are generated in tewks. I have not seen any locked
projects to date.

If anyone can reproduce this, let us know.

Re: [Avid-L2] Mac G5 help needed - Grey Screen of Death

I had experiences similar to Jamie with my dual 2.5 G5. And after poking
through way too many help pages and user forums, making the same Energy
Saver changes as Jamie seemed to do the trick...until two RAM sticks started
to die. Then when I pulled those, everything was again hunky dory (but still
kinda pokey).

You can test your RAM with memtest or rember. Rember just adds a GUI to the
command-line memtest...but that¹s a good thing. Links to both here:

http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember/

But really Greg, the best solution is for you to buy my G5 complete with
Kona 2 card and bob. Please?

Jim

Software only. It doesn't like you're system audio driver. Maybe try reinstalling it.

Thanks.

You have to do a mixdown on them in the source project before moving over to the other frame rate. It is an automated process that occurs when you modify the sequence in the original project to the target frame rate before moving to the new frame rate project.

[Avid-L2] 24 SEQUENCE INTO 30i -SWEET!

WOW. I have been impressed with the mx & match handling of non-native
source clips when cutting a new sequences, but today I found a real gem.

Started a 30i project
opened a bin from a 24P project
Opened a SEQUENCE that had been cut @ 24p
BAM! it converted the whole thing to a playable 30i sequence complete
with layers and effects.

That's amazing step forward and I got a real tickle out of it.

Thanks Frank.

(Only limitation I found was the inability to handle imported matte keys
that were non-native. MC seemed fine with Avid fx, keyframes and plugins)

[Avid-L2] Upgrade problem

Hello all.
I've just upgraded to MC v4.0.5 Software only (MacPro 2 x 2/8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon/Mac OS X 10.6.2) When I launch MC I get the Exception: Failed to initialize audio hardware. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

Re: [Avid-L2] Unity Lanshare spontanous restarts

I had a MediaArray LP do this about a year ago... I think the chassis are
identical for these products.

In my case, it turned out to be the redundant power supply cage in the
server. The cage supports three swappable power supplies, which all connect
to a single backplane inside the box. The machine would hard restart several
times a day (nothing in the logs, just a plain, quick loss of power) then
boot back up on its own (the bios tells the box to restart after a power
failure.)

Avid ended up sending a replacement server, though I had found the parts to
swap out online, too.

Hope this helps,

Ryan Johnson

Re: [Avid-L2] Unity Lanshare spontanous restarts

I would check hardware first - like RAID controllers (the 3ware card), Atto
fiber, video card, switches and power supply.

Also, make sure electricity feed is up to par. Often people connect their
server on a 20Amp line with other devices.

Re: [Avid-L2] Avid Hire in Austin, texas

Hello all

Truth be told I'm just passing the info on to the client. I'm just
trying to help them out. They had booked a FCP. Which will work with
quicktimes back to us, but our plan was to cut with 15:1s MXF then
conform the selects when the tapes get here.
Thanks for everyones help. Hopefully they will be in contact.
Jeff, I think they may have another camera person working out of LA
that may need this doing so I'll past on your info for that one.
Trouble is this project seems to change by the minute.
It's a 60 min on the earthquake on air Monday. Thank goodness I'm just
an engineer. ;)

Hi,
I have a Unity Lanshare 4.2.4 that keeps restarting the server 5-10 times a day, any ideas what might be causing it?

Good tip - thanks. All that stuff was set to 'never,' but 'processor
performance' was set to 'automatic.' I switched it to 'highest,' and
have my fingers crossed.

Re: [Avid-L2] Mac G5 help needed - Grey Screen of Death

I've had a couple of these machines that acted pretty much the same
way as what your describing and doing the same thing, using it a
archiving station. I reinstalled the OS from scratch, pulled and
swapped out RAM Sticks, swapped out hard drives, all with no change.
About the only way that I could get these to work somewhat reliably,
was to go to energy saver in system prefs and never let the computer
or the displays go to sleep. Had one machine that did this all the
time, and with making these changes, I currently have a uptime on that
machine of 65 days. Give it a shot. Of course, your milage may vary.
Good luck.

1080 post
Action Figure
Elephant (maybe, not sure if they are still Avid or FCP)
Arrowhead (again maybe)

If you need contact info let me know.

In support of Greg, it might be cheaper to use his facility then a
full on suite for what you want to do.

[Avid-L2] Re: Mac G5 help needed - Grey Screen of Death

I would suspect the power supply might be iffy. I've lost one on a pc but before it died it would get wonky if say two of the dvd drives were being used. In other words it was just barely supplying enough power to run the system and then it wouldn't even do that. Just a guess but the power supply is one of the hardest working components in the box.

[Avid-L2] Mac G5 help needed - Grey Screen of Death

I have a last-generation G5- the dual-dual, (4 x 2.5) with 8 gig ram
(8 1-gig SDRam) running 10.5.7

about once a day, it just crashes to the 'grey screen of death.' This
is the machine we use the least, so it hasn't been that big of a
deal, but it's also the machine we're TRYING to use as an archiving
station. Naturally, when it crashes during a long LTO or drive copy,
it's very frustrating.

Anyone seen this problem before, or have a suggestion where to start
looking for the trouble? As far as I know, it's done this for years-
we just never paid much attention to it. May have done it when it
was new, but 'back then' (5 years ago?) we didn't leave it on for
extended periods of time. This system's had a variety of boards and
applications on it- nothing like that seems to effect it one way or
the other.

Thanks in advance for any tips or clues.

with an avid to digitise some 25 fps HDCAM tapes in to an Avid at 15:1s MXF.
Then FTP over to us in London. It's a quick turn around news type job. Does
any one know of a facility that could do this?
Thanks in advance.

How is it cheaper than MetaFuze->MXF (free) or anything->ProRes (free if you
own FCP)? Are low budget producers counting hours where you live? For

What am I missing here?

[Avid-L2] Re: Q logic SanBox 5600 16 port fibre switch?

That's correct- remember tho, the ports on said switch are controlled by licensing, not all may work out of the box.

John's issue really sounds more like something is sending the physical drives into "park" mode.

[Avid-L2] Re: Avid /fcp red you Ty

The native solutions for RED finish using Apple, Adobe or other desktop solutions are interesting, but primarily appeal to low budget producers. It's true that Stu M is a big proponent of AE for finishing in his DV Rebel concept, yet he designed his own "Spirit" post pipeline around Nucoda Filmmaster.

The RED 4K desktop post demos play nice on simple jobs and for a receptive audience, but what happens when RED ups the ante to 5K and more? What happens in the real world when you mix camera codecs, frame rates, aspect ratios, frame sizes, etc.? What about the new RAW formats coming down the pike (ArriRAW or SI2K for example)?

I'm not AE expert, but as I see it, finishing in AE challenges you with several deficiencies. For example, AE has no basic editorial tools like a dissolve (needs to be opacity change on different tracks), freeze frame or motion effects (without using time-remap plug-ins).

There are no sophisticated, native color grading tools in AE. This is done via very good plug-ins, like Colorista, Looks, Color Finesse or others from CoreMelt or Noise Industries. None of these tools offer proper in-context grading inside AE. None of these tools work with the camera-raw data itself. They all work AFTER the raw data is adjusted and decoded. So, what's the advantage over other solutions?

AE is valid in that it is good and can get the job done. There's a real place for their native RED workflow in spot work and on low cost visual effects. I don't see it as the best overall solution for a complex RED project. I go back to my first point that this solution in the long form world is for masochists. It appeals to the producers who have no money, but a lot of time - or who place no value on the cost of their time.

Re: [Avid-L2] Q logic SanBox 5600 16 port fibre switch?

I believe that the SanBox 5600 is what Avid uses on their Unity
systems now, so it should be fine for what you are doing.

Re: [Avid-L2] Q logic SanBox 5600 16 port fibre switch?

We have pushed several streams of DNxHD and ProRes (each stream is
roughly 1:1 SD) through the 5600 without problems. More often than not,
your problem is caused by a bad configuration somewhere down the line.

Check the firmware of your Sanbox. Make sure your FC cards are set
correctly (use Atto Config Tool if you are using Celerity cards) on both
the client and server side.

Sure seems like 2 SD 1:1 streams shouldn't choke the system but the Avid seems to get finicky when doing a digital cut while someone captures on another system on the SanMP. Just trying to learn a little more about what could be going on. I know SanMP is not ideal but it seems to have been configured properly so I don't have a clue what if anything has changed to cause this problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
