Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Offloading disks, first beta available

I'm nearly done...
Worry free, automated offloading.
http://www.videotoolshed.com/?page=products&pID=15

Deleting files does not yet work (intentionally, i've left it out for now as
i'm a bit afraid of deleting stuff on other peoples computers...)
But the rest is full functional.

Don't be shy with feedback, either positive or negative, and either here or

Re: [Avid-L2] BD recorders?

Well, that's a burner to hook to a computer. The ones I'm talking
about are regular video decks -- take A/V in and burn a disk in
real time. The decks here start at about $450 for discs only,
about $550 for hard disk/blue ray disk recorders. Look here for a
listing:
http://tinyurl.com/yctpzhg

HOWEVER, after seeing Terry's comment about the US JVC unit only
having SD input, I checked the specs of the Japanese models. The
same. SD input only. HDMI and component output. You can only
record TV in HD, or copy your HD home videos from the camera's
SDHC chip or over USB. Unbelievable. Useless. Wreck the product.
But, hey, it stops piracy, right? NO.

Am not sure how many people know this but after the 30 day trial period is
up, the projects created while on Trial are completely inaccessable. Doesn't
matter that you may have upgraded the dongle *after* the Trial!

Terry is right, I was talking about standalone recording devices, not
burners. Those burners I can pick up at the street corner here.

But are there any devices that will actually record a signal that my Symph
Ntris is able to supply? 1920x1080 24.00PsF over HD-SDI or Component?

Thanks, but that of course raises a few more questions.
My Symphony Nitris spits out 24.00PsF over HD-SDI or Component, my external
mixer spits out analog or digital audio.

The inputs on that Panasonic you linked to appear to be regular "old-school"
analog inputs (RGB PAL). I very much doubt the unit accepts anything I can
supply it with to record that on disk.

So how do these things work? How would they work for us?

[Avid-L2] Re: BD recorders?

If your on an Avid and have the bundled pack you will have the Sonic DVD software (DVDit HD) this allows output from the avid via QT ref to the software to create Blu-ray or SD DVD projects. Just add a Blu-ray burner and off you go.
At least you can burn multiple copies and with or without menus plus add extra audio tracks if needed.
The cost of the blank BD-R disks makes a standalone burning an expensive item for real time burns.
With an authoring step and controlled burns you can use BD-RE (re-writable) to test if need be.

Also the Blu-ray burner in the PC makes a very nice media backup solution at 50GB per DL disk. Not masses but that's a lot of DVD-Rs

Compared to what we've grown used to over the past few years, yes -
but nowhere near the level of pain when DVD-V and CD-DA "burning" was
first made available. Of course those original burners cost $12.5k
and $22k respectively - so not a lot of *anything* was being burned
outside of authoring / mastering houses.

DVD-Authoring blanks ran $30/each about 10 years ago, and a single
650mb CD-DA blank was about $40-45 back in '89 (or at least that's
what the mastering houses charged).

You kids have it so easy these days...

I typically add an unobtrusive watermark (company logo) using Squeeze
to add branding and "discourage" distribution.

But this little fella...

http://lists.apple.com/archives/QuickTime-Users/2007/Dec/msg00075.html

will effectively disable *all* user modifiable file attributes
normally accessible via QT Pro. It's an Applescript drag n' droplet
which adds and enables the "nsav" attribute / flag. You then won't be
able to save / save as / export / change attributes (Properties) etc.
etc. etc.

WARNING:: MAKE A COPY Of YOUR ORIGINAL FIRST!!!!! Once the QT file is
made un-editable, there's no going back (or at least easy way back
that I've determined) so ALWAYS WORK ON A COPY!!!!!

As always, test and verify before deployment to make sure it works as
expected for you on your platform and in your environment (because we
all know how fscking stable Quicktime releases are, right?)

Oh, did I mention... MAKE A COPY OF YOUR ORIGINAL FIRST !!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it on the timeline or on the bottom of all the clips. If it is the bottom of all the clips, it sounds like you've applied a CC to the entire show. You can do that by selecting it in the color corrector. Look for Program segment mode.

[Avid-L2] Re: BD recorders?

A sore subject at best. Yes, JVC came out with one, but the only inputs are SD and HDV!

I assume this is an antipiracy issue, but it looks like after you pay a couple grand for the recorder, you would then have to find a converter to go from HD-SDI to HDV! Blech! :-/

Tim provided a link to a Panasonic model that shows SD inputs. It does list an RGB input, but that says (PAL) next to it and makes me suspect it is SD only also.

What David provided a link to is just a BLURAY burner. This would be necessary when authoring disks. There are quite a few of those and I am looking for any recommendations from folks who are currently using one.

Since the disks can be as high as 18.00 (Archival quality) I am also looking for recommendations here. It is going to be very expensive to make mistake discs now.

[Avid-L2] Re: Juggling with Cannon 7D QT metadata

I can replace decompose with consolidate and delete media, I tried it before for something else. takes some time, but nothing comparing with full reimport.

They seem to be damn popular here.

Best Buy carries the discs but no burner. Odd.

That would be great, but i don't think is possible, yet.
If you decompose a sequence with batch imported files Avid will try to
import the whole file.
Don't know if that has changed on the newest version of MC.

Re: [Avid-L2] OT - "copy discourage" Quicktime for web?

Paul,

Why not do 2 things.

Use a low-res with burn in. This allows people to admire your skill with
out risking someone else claiming your work as their own. You could even
post it on YouTube yourself. :)

Also provide a hi-res version on a link which requires a password which
it would mean contacting you to obtain. Only someone reasonably serious
would contact you for the link. This suggests if they copy it they have
a pretty good reason and you will know who is interested in your work
and probably why.

Re: [Avid-L2] BD recorders?

They sell them here in Japan; work just like the DVD recorders.
And I believe I heard somewhere that they are only being sold
here at this point.

If you can't find them locally, I would be willing to help any
Avid-L member to import one as a thanks to all the help I get

Looks like they're available in the UK, which may work better for

[Avid-L2] OT - "copy discourage" Quicktime for web?

I'm trying to create a "video-wall" of Quicktimes on a web page as an
editor's demo sampler. It doesn't seem there are solid copy-protect
options for Quicktime anymore. How about "copy discourage"? In the
past I was able to use Cleaner* to effectively grey-out "Save As
Quicktime Movie" on the Qt controller. (This was done by checking a
Cleaner option to "disable saving")

I could muddle along with Cleaner but it doesn't seem to have much of
a future since the (Mac) world has moved to Compressor. Suggestions
very welcome.

Thanks,

Paul

p.s. I had been using Cleaner 6, not sure if the "disable saving"
implementation had anything to do with Qt attrib "KIOSKMODE" but
this doesn't seem to work either

Maybe you can use metacheater to generate an ALE of all your files, then
open that ALE on Excel and duplicate Name column to Tape Column, import ALE
on Avid and batchimport.

Hope this helps.

Not sure if it'll work, but an educated guess.
On latest MC, QT Timecode is imported with the clip.
Thus then you're problem should be solved if you add TC to the clips.
To do so, use this free util:
http://www.videotoolshed.com/?page=products&pID=42

It's mac only, if you need windows, let me know and i'll compile a windows
version.

Hi, I'm working on a workflow for 7D on MC using audio TC.
The problem I'm having is that in order to read audio tc MC needs the master
clips to have a Tape name,
which the imported files don't have. if i add a source using modify choosing
all clips, MC successfully copies the audio tc to the aux. tc column, but
the aux. tc immediately switches to be the same for every clip since they
have the same Tape name & TC.
I tried using Ctrl+D to duplicate the name column into the tape column but
MC doesn't allow it.
my current frustrating workaround is to modify each clip separately, it
works, but my wrist is hurting.
I thought about using Metafuse 2.1 to create an ale that will have "File
name = Clip name = Tape name" structure but MF insists on grouping all my
files and giving all of them the same clip name, so that didn't go very far.
anyone got an automated solution for this?

Re: [Avid-L2] Green Bar At Bottom Of Timeline On Symphony

I know this track of which you speak Job, and it ain't it.

However, foollishly I hadn't thought to look in my timeline hamburger,
'Show Track'... It's the 'Performance Ribbon' (although interestingly
it was in view, but not ticked.

Re: [Avid-L2] Green Bar At Bottom Of Timeline On Symphony

This from Barry...

Is it a 24P project? I sold my symph 2 years ago- I dont remember
seeing that.
Maybe clues in timeline options?

Me:

Nah - it's 25i SD. There's nothing that I can see in the settings to
indicate just what it is, and I don't see anything in the user guide.
It doesn't seem to do much in terms of changing colour or anything
like that.

Re: [Avid-L2] Green Bar At Bottom Of Timeline On Symphony

Is it not by any chance a track labeled "F" rather than "P"?
If so, if you enlarge it, you should see your video in a track of small
pictures. If you click the Timeline hamburger, under "Show Tracks" you can
(de)select the displaying of that track ("film").

[Avid-L2] Juggling with Cannon 7D QT metadata

Hi, I'm working on a workflow for 7D on MC using audio TC.
The problem I'm having is that in order to read audio tc MC needs the master clips to have a Tape name,
which the imported files don't have. if i add a source using modify choosing all clips, MC successfully copies the audio tc to the aux. tc column, but the aux. tc immediately switches to be the same for every clip since they have the same Tape name & TC.
I tried using Ctrl+D to duplicate the name column into the tape column but MC doesn't allow it.
my current frustrating workaround is to modify each clip separately, it works, but my wrist is hurting.
I thought about using Metafuse 2.1 to create an ale that will have "File name = Clip name = Tape name" structure but MF insists on grouping all my files and giving all of them the same clip name, so that didn't go very far.
anyone got an automated solution for this?

[Avid-L2] Green Bar At Bottom Of Timeline On Symphony

Morning friends,

I've had a cursory search through the manual, but couldn't immediately
see any reference to this green bar on the bottom of the timeline on a
Symphony 3.5.1... It's right below the 'TC', and is labelled 'P'.
Haven't noticed it on a Media Composer before.

I haven't got the foggiest idea what it is... Anyone got a quick answer?

[Avid-L2] BD recorders?

So what's the current status on standalone Blu-Ray recorders?
Much more of my offline work is HD now, and I would like to be able to run
one-off playouts from my Avid onto a BD for clients.

Don't seem to be able to find anything that would instantly replace my
DVD-recorders.

Or is it just a bad idea and would I be better off authoring a BD disk with
the computer?

Any opinions?

Thanks.

[Avid-L2] Re: Install MC on a new partition, same computer

You could use the 30 day trial on the new startup drive couldn't you. Never tried but I think you might be good unless you've already tried.

Unfortunately the system drive is also part of the scheme. Got burned by this early on. If your system drive dies, even if you have a clone, you better have deactivated before the drive died. That's why I'm still using dongles.
