Re: [Avid-L2] New title tool

I have never had the need for AE, so we don't own it. But 'scriptable'
intrigues me!! We air on 13 stations, and each station gets it's own set
of 'brought to you by...' etc., titles, each with a different set each
week of the month. If I can script that... wow, it'll speed up out work
flow!

I'm going to have to study that.

Re: [Avid-L2] New title tool

Hi Marianna,

Thanks so much. As to Titler+ trashing kanji titles, it occurred to me
that I run Avid in English, on a Japanese OS, so if I switch the Avid
GUI to Japanese, it might work. I'm out of the office today, so will
test tomorrow. In the early days of Avid, there was a lot of funkiness
in how it handled Japanese.

But even if that workaround works, your team needs to make Titler+
promote UTF8 titles!

On New Blue, it turned out I hadn't installed it (why the option was in
the Effect Pallette, I don't know...) After installing, it should up as
an option in the promote menu, but selecting it does nothing, and using
it to create a new title doesn't work either -- the NB gui never shows up.

Re: [Avid-L2] New title tool

[Edited Message Follows]

One break through I had a while back with Titler+ is that when promoting classic title tool I had to be in an HD format which it will prompt you to do IIRC.  The quirk was if I promoted one title to Titler+ then toggled to 4K format to check it when I went back to HD format to promote other titles the promoted titles would be blank.  If I restarted the project then it would work.  Through trial and error I decided that I had to promote all the titles to Titler+ before switching the project format to 4K or UHD.  This was on flavors of 2018.x  Probably 2018.12.15 so maybe the more modern Avid versions don't exhibit this quirk.

Re: [Avid-L2] New title tool

Hi Sol, I used to be an editor too, you could / should have rembembered it.
Of course, it is a HUGE PITA, but really, pick your poison.
Do you edit in Premiere or Resolve?

For revising, that is where Adobe is REALLY good, as you can script.

(And I can bitch way more about Avid than you can, pixel shifting positions and stuff…)

Now I'm off to get food, do some decent cooking.
Learn some scripting to make your life easier, really, it WILL help / pay off. (I made a sorta kinda living out of it.)

Lou I agree but I have to say I'm in cabin fever mode.  My experience with Titler+ is it's just plain bad.  They have turned simple tasks into an arduous nightmare.  The vocabulary is strange and non intuitive.  All I want is a text field but there are layers and IIRC objects.  The selection process is foreign to the traditional Title Tool even though much of it looks similar it works very differently.  And when I say works I've never used it successfully so I opted to New Blue for very basic stuff. It's astonishing but in my limited tasks I've found New Blue does a better job promoting Title Tool to New Blue than Title Tool to Titler+.  That in and of itself is astonishing.  Don't get me wrong New Blue promotion of Title Tool is not great but it gives me a fighting chance.

The biggest thing I just learned a week ago is that there is a green circle around the play button in new blue and it indicates that the title has been cached.  It can take several minutes for the cache to complete for something like a roll.  If you close new blue before the cache is complete it will continue to cache in the background but it caches slower.  This is why it took me four hours to add one line to a credit roll.  I didn't realize it was stuck caching so for 5 or more minutes I'd just get the scrub to refresh window and no amount of scrubbing would refresh it. So I kept quiting Avid thinking it was a ram or vram issue.  New Blue reacts very slowly on my MacPro mid 2012 with 64 GB of ram and GTX-680 with 2 GB vram.  I'm wondering if a GTX-780 with 6GB vram would improve performance.  I have and expansion chassis with two Titan X GPUs but I don't think New Blue uses them.

So this is me, the guy who hates fonts and misses title tool, telling you in my small world I've found New Blue less painful for the simple things I've done.

Re: [Avid-L2] New title tool

Sort of answered my own question. New Blue was in the effects
pallette, but was apparently not yet installed.

Not that installing it was useful or anything. It crashes Avid
everytime I try to use it -- either promoting an old title or
creating a new one.

This may be the thing that pushed us away from Avid for good....

Re: [Avid-L2] New title tool

John

I have just made the jump to M1 Macs and the new OS, and have
discovered to my horror that the old Title tool does not work.
Huge impact on our workflow.

Anyway, sorry to be reviving an old thread, but you write
> I've found New Blue does a better job promoting Title Tool to New Blue than Title Tool to Titler+

How to you promote old titles on old sequences to New Blue? I
can't find it. And just for everyone's edification, promoting a
Japanese text title with Titler+ DESTROYS it -- the kanji turns
to gobbledygook that is impossible to return back to kanji. Avid
-- SERIOUS #$0)(% SCREWUP!!

Any way, if you, John, or anyone can tell me how to promote a
title in New Blue, I really need to know! The "Promote Titles"
option in the right-click menu only gives an option for Titler+. TIA

Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.

It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share

information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for

professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to

share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no

better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of

informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the

group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users

Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy

Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery

for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at

the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,

Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.  In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true

international scope with over 300  international members. The community

included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate

organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,

as well as and  multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated

Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list.  The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Groups.io’s tools and will remain that way.

In 2019,  the Group has migrated to Groups,io from the previous Yahoo engine-   the Groups.io page  maintains the complete Avid-L2 archive.    The original Avid-L archive has been lost to the history of the interwebz.

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Extras!
