Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.

It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share

information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for

professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to

share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no

better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of

informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the

group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users

Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy

Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery

for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at

the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,

Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.  In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true

international scope with over 300  international members. The community

included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate

organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,

as well as and  multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated

Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list.  The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Groups.io’s tools and will remain that way.

In 2019,  the Group has migrated to Groups,io from the previous Yahoo engine-   the Groups.io page  maintains the complete Avid-L2 archive.    The original Avid-L archive has been lost to the history of the interwebz.

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Extras!

With a Groups.io account tied to your subscription to the Avid-L2,  you can use the web features of the Group.

Aaaaaahhhh... that takes me back.  Way back, to before the point my life diverged from a path ending with just a minor in philosophy to a major and career in media.

Best wishes to all for a happy and successful 2023!

I bet you can find a lot of "unknownium" with Schrodinger's Cat.  I hear he uses it like Cat Nip or doesn't it's hard to tell.  ;-)

Re: [Avid-L2] Dell Precision 3660 Tower PCIe slot use

Dave,

I know your frustration with getting information from Dell.  I've spent close to 4 hours trying to track down the Thunderbolt 4 PCIe card that the Precision 3660 Tower spec sheet says exists.  I purchased this 3660T from the Dell Business Outlet but while researching I found the TB4 card even appears as an add-in board if you do a custom 3660T build.  However selecting that option throws a "restricted item" warning with no further information.

This experience has resulted in the submission for consideration of a new element to the periodic table.  It will follow right after "unobtanium" and "vaporwarium".   I've taken the liberty to name this new element "unknownium".   Whereas unobtanium represents a known element that simply can't be found, unknownium represents a nearly mythical element that exists only in vague textual references, similar to vaporwarium but with a lot less marketing hype and a lot more elusive.  No part number or product code is associated with unknownium.  No OEM department (sales, customer service, tech support) can verify its physical existence or even confirm knowledge of it.

For the time being at least I have an assortment of USB 3.2 Type-C Gen 2 (10 Gbps) and Gen 2x2 (20 Gbps) ports and external RAID storage compatible with that.

Cheers!

Karl –

What do you have to lose?

BTW, the last Dell I configured had the Thunderbolt turned off in the BIOS.  It was a pain to figure out – even Dell tech support didn't have a clue.

Subject: [Avid-L2] Dell Precision 3660 Tower PCIe slot use

Is anyone using a Dell Precision 3660 Tower along with an Avid DNX-IQ (or the BMD equivalent) with MC 2022.x?

I'm putting together such a system at the moment and am curious if anyone has installed the BMD PCIe cable kit in slot #1 of the 3660T instead of slot #3 as Avid recommends.  And, if so, whether you had any performance issues.

Slot #3, which is PCIe Gen 4, seems like overkill as the BMD PCIe I/O card is a PCIe Gen 3 device.  Slot #1 would appear to be better match as it is a PCIe Gen 3 slot.

Putting the BMD in slot #1 would allow me to leave slot #3 open for the Dell Thunderbolt 4 PCIe card, when and if it becomes available, for external storage.

Avid recommends slot #1 be used for Nexis shared storage with up to 40Gb support so I doubt there would be a data bandwidth issue with that slot/bus and the BMD card, but I'm certainly no expert.

I realize Avid would never have the time to test all possible configurations and I've got some spare time so I suppose I'll give it a try and see what results I get.

Feel free to chime in if you've gone down this path.

By "portable workstations" do you mean laptops or is that a description of your entire mobile kit?

Hi Tod,

Thanks for your thoughts, they confirm my suppositions.  The portable workstation model is most certainly fitting my current editing needs at a price point that allows me at least 2 portables to the price of a single tower.

Re: [Avid-L2] CPU cores, speed, number of... diminishing returns?

Hey Greg,

I did briefly look at the AMD Threadripper option, but not in detail.  Time to dig a little deeper.

I am familiar with the HP Remarketing site.  I wish it was more user friendly for searching.  I never signed up for an email list, perhaps that's a better option.

Dell's version, their Business Outlet, has been my go-to over the past year.  The inventory is feature/model searchable and Dell has been VERY aggressive with their pricing.  Each of the four "refurbished" portable workstations I've purchased have arrived in brand new condition.  And (hopefully not to sound like a fanboy) Dell offers a ProSupport Plus plan (available 1 to 5 years) that includes next day service and accident damage coverage for about $125/yr.

I use the portable workstations on the road a lot (roughly 40 events a year) so that coverage is worth it.

Cheers!

Tod totally sums this up with a cool catchphrase!!

If you need peak power, you need a tower.

Boom! ^_^

Yes. Cores not CPUs. Multiple CPUs were made obsolete by high core counts. Cores are more efficient so a single multi-core is faster than dual CPUs with the same total cores. CPU codec acceleration, specifically h264 and 265 acceleration are also key. Almost all modern CPUs have this, and h264 is the most common camera codec. Mac M1s also have ProRes acceleration. I do not know the specifics of Media Composer's use of these accelerations, but they are critical to Premiere and Final Cut and have changed the power equation dramatically.

Are towers even necessary any more for routine file-based editing?

No, not really. There are two major reasons for towers: cooling and customization. Towers are built to be customized. However, both of these needs are becoming less important as CPUs get much cooler and systems become fundamentally more powerful and connectable, and therefor require less modification over time.

For example, I just purchased a Mac Studio. This box can't be modified, but it has more than enough horsepower to edit 4K video with aplomb, and with thunderbolt connections, add-ons are externalized. Is this the peak of performance? No. Is it more than enough for most editors? Yes.

If you need peak power, you need a tower. Otherwise, you don't really. That doesn't mean a tower is a bad idea. Towers can be more cost effective and are upgradable, so you can spend less now and upgrade later if needed. If you have the space and sound is not an issue, a tower may still be the way to go.

Re: [Avid-L2] CPU cores, speed, number of... diminishing returns?

I don't follow the latest info anymore, but I got an amazing year-end deal from Lenovo a few years back.  I'm mostly just a bum now, and mostly run Resolve when I have worked the last two years, but the AMD 'threadripper' based p620 has been a GREAT machine, even without considering the low price.  No thunderbolt, but I have a mac laptop for the rare occasion I need to copy media off a tbolt.

Alternatively, back when I had multiple edit bays and workstations, I was emailed the 'HP Remarketing' daily inventory.  Got great deals on a few killer machines (for their time) off that list over the years.  If you're not familiar, google around to find that and see if they have what you're looking for.

I recently started using a Dell 7760 I9 11th Gen laptop for editing and find it performs surprisingly well for everyday HD file-based editing.  I just ordered a Dell 7770 I9 12th Gen with even more horsepower and will compare that to the 7760.

My gut tells me I would like a tower workstation for the main edit suite, that's what I've used since Adrenaline.   Yet, when I build a custom Dell or HP tower I feel as though I'm piecing together dated tech.  Surprisingly not a single major OEM is offering native Thunderbolt support in their towers, and their optional TB boards are behind the curve.  Nor will they divulge if/when they will offer native onboard TB support.  The tower CPU options also seem to be lagging behind those found in their laptops.

My questions are:

Calendar  Various Avid events are in the Calender.  If you have an event you'd like posted,  pull down and fill out the Calendar event request and send it to any Moderator

Database - The database area contains Avid Feature requests,  Help Wanted,  Freelance Listings and For Sale sections.  Feel free to add your listings to any of these areas.  Job Postings will remain up for 1 month.   Please date all postings to the database areas, being pertinent is a good way to be.

Files-  The files section contains various sundry files, including the latest Avid release notes.  Check back often for changes.

Photos -  Pictures of your Avid setup are welcome, or pictures relating to a post you need a photo to explain.  Photos will be posted after moderator approval.  Who knows, your picture might grace the front page for a while.

Links-  Various helpful links, including direct links to Avid CPR releases can be found here, also the link to the archives.
