Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.

It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share

information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for

professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to

share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no

better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of

informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the

group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users

Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy

Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery

for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at

the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,

Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only.  In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true

international scope with over 300  international members. The community

included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate

organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,

as well as and  multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated

Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list.  The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Groups.io’s tools and will remain that way.

In 2019,  the Group has migrated to Groups,io from the previous Yahoo engine-   the Groups.io page  maintains the complete Avid-L2 archive.    The original Avid-L archive has been lost to the history of the interwebz.

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Extras!

With a Groups.io account tied to your subscription to the Avid-L2,  you can use the web features of the Group.

Re: [Avid-L2] AMA Link heartache in a remote shared environment

And they are related to the producer.
I was reading through the thread and thinking, “why is this person who doesn’t know what they’re doing and not willing to cooperate still on the project?” and there there it is.

Does the producer care about budgets and deadlines? If so… their niece/nephew might need to get replaced (along with a lesson in what it means to “collaborate as part of an editing team.”)

There are plenty of other editors out there who are more than happy to be in this spot. There’s no room in this business to be difficult to work with.

Re: [Avid-L2] Sony BVM-300/310 Input Basics?

[Edited Message Follows]

For the sake of clarity for those that haven't HDR'd in Resolve land.  Thanks to Dom I've long taken advantage of the automatic HD/2K downconvert that happens on my Avid DNxIO.  It also supports in HD mode the dual SDI output from Resolve which facilitates the Primary output SDI to be HDR PQ and at the same time the 2nd spigot will output the Target Display which if enabled will display tone mapped output to facilitate the Layer 2 and other layer trim pass required for a DolbyVision IMF or other masters.

Without these bigger IO boxes or cards there is no way to use dual SDI and now I've learned that the 310's support single link on SDI 2 set but not on SDI 1 when running in 4K

My understanding from seminars is for a long time most cards/ IO boxes could only do dual SDI output in HD mode but the newer more powerful ones can do it in 4K

Re: [Avid-L2] Sony BVM-300/310 Input Basics?

Correct. The x300 does not support 12G.

Thanks for the info.  I pointed out to them that the mini does not support dual SDI to get the Target Display Tone Mapped output on spigot 2 while the PQ HDR output still is on spigot 1.  I think that's worth it for the trim pass ease but nobody asks or listens to me.

So the fact that the SDI 2 BNC set had 12G printed on the back panel that must mean this used monitor is a 310, do I understand this correctly?

Re: [Avid-L2] AMA Link heartache in a remote shared environment

I've found at times if I had ama clips offline if I re ama link to the source files then the original offline clips get a nudge and they relink to the files.  It's always a cat and mouse thing.  If you don't have the original file to re ama link to that may not be an option.  Perhaps IIRC  you could consolidate only the linked clips on the sequence to a new mxf folder.  How silly are you for using Avid on a remote project?  Everybody knows Adobe is way better with media management and collaborative workflows!!!  NOT!!!!  :-)

Re: [Avid-L2] AMA Link heartache in a remote shared environment

This person is averse to being accommodating. They openly hate Media Composer and would prefer to work with PP. And they are related to the producer. Who I probably have to get involved again. This is not the first issue that has come up. I'll be lucky to get the source audio files before next Friday. If ever.

A true nightmare.

Re: [Avid-L2] AMA Link heartache in a remote shared environment

Jay,  I've been through this and similar issues many times.  Even with
technically limited editors it's possible to slowly walk them through
transcoding their sequence.  You just need to do it step by step.  It's
more difficult, but still possible, with people who are just averse to
following instructions.  You just sit on the phone with them and break
it down into little steps. The easiest thing, of course, is if you have
a way to remote into their computer.  Seems like once I had someone use
Facetime and point their phone at their screen.  Good luck.  --J.B.

Re: [Avid-L2] AMA Link heartache in a remote shared environment

I've screwed that up many times - but not on a project where we're working simultaneously- but on one that I'm handing over to another editor, or adding in a second editor.   Tons of stuff is AMA'd and it doesn't show up when the sequence is transferred.

'Relink to file' seems to work in almost all cases, but each editor would probably need the source file.

It used to be that you could just alt-drag-and-drop the offending file into a new 'temp' bin in the duplicate project, and the original AMA would magically also be relinked, but that doesn't really seem to work anymore??

I have a complete lack of faith in the ability of this particular remote editor to be accommodating or technically proficient.  I'm going to do some more testing on the systems I have direct access to.  Maybe I'll figure something out.  I was hoping that someone on the L2 had already worked this issue out before.  I'll post here if I do get something reasonable to work.

Can the remote editor with the AMA links transcode the clips or the edited sequence to your preferred resolution?
Can they export an AAF of the edited sequence?

Otherwise, if you get their bins and the original files, you may be able to re-link to them and then find a way to move those clips into your desired mxf media format.

Good luck, let us know what you do.

So how do I deal with this?  Technically, not interpersonally.  What is the solution to get this bin/sequence from them that has linked audio and then get it converted to Avid MXF media?  Can I import on my end and relink the sequence?  Can I batch import?  I mean I've tried some of this and it has not worked, but maybe I'm doing it wrong.  I rarely deal with AMA linking and when I do it's very specific and on single workstations, no sharing.

Do I have to get the original files from them, import them and re-edit all the audio, and reset all the levels on the clips?  I mean if I have to I will, but just wondering if there was a less soul crushing way to get it done.

The remote editors are on v2018.  I have access to v2018 and v2021.

Thank you,

Look for MDVx. It’s very good. While at the website look at BlendX as well.

I downloaded and installed MDV yesterday on my Catalina system and it works great.

Possibly one of these will do the trick?

Anyone working in Mac OS 12.2.1 with MC 2021.12.0?

I realize it isn't officially blessed. I missed the upgrade form 12.0 to 12.1 and that installer doesn't seem to be available anywhere any more (even to the Apple Support folks apparently.)

Any predictions/rumors as to when the release of a 2022 version of MC will take place?

Thanks,

+1 for Shutter Encoder (which is an FFMPEG GUI). The dev is really responsive too.

Thanks for the quick and constructive suggestions. I completely forgot about all the things Shutter Encoder can do!

I don't use Adobe Media Encoder, but Shutter Encoder did the trick with ease converting the Quicktime file into AVI using the H.264 codec.

Or if not Media Encoder, try Shutter Encoder. Free but well worth donating to the coder.
