[Avid-L2] Re: [Editing-List] LUTs of Wrath! Lut processing order and proper levels?

Our typical workflow does not use input LUTs.  Only an output LUT to go from Log to Rec709 (or whatever output is needed).  That way your grade is applied to the Log footage and then it's converted to your delivery colorspace in the final step.  If you use an input LUT to put it in the delivery color space before grading then your grade is only relevant to that input LUT.

For archive purposes, which seems to mean future proofing, we deliver a textless and also an ungraded master.  The ungraded master in theory is supposed to have the "Output LUT" removed but the grading remains.  The problem is if I just remove the LUT color adapters and leave the symphony color correction the resulting file doesn't look right if the Vlog and scaler LUTs are readded.  This all makes sense to me as the processing order is important.  If the LUTs aren't processed first the resulting color correction is vastly different.  I understand why this is but it seems problematic to start creating color correction LUT effects to use on upper tracks so that I in essence do the symphony color correction before the footage is LUT processed.

The idea behind shoot in Log be it Panny Vlog or Arri LogC etc is the image date gets remapped by a math transform to new values that will fit into the dynamic range of the codec used.  Later the values and be "unmapped" back to an image that represents what they were looking at in the field.  If I start color correcting the image before it hits the LUT processing I'm messing with the math transform math.  Given the complexity of the math involved, which favors image detail in the more visible areas and also may be doing different things to the various YUV channel data, I would think adjusting the levels before the unmapping takes place is breaking the math and could lead to some very strange results.

I've done tests with my existing workflow and if I turn the LUTs into Color Correction LUT effects I have to create a color correction effect based on the symphony color correction and apply that above the LUT Color Correction effects to achieve the same image levels I have in my normal sequence.

Bottom line it just seems wrong to me to apply image color correction before applying the LUTs as it breaks the math involved in the Log/Lut relationship.  Does that seem like a viable concern?

With 4.5 stars in iTunes, the Yahoo Mail app is the highest rated email app on the market. What are you waiting for? Now you can access all your inboxes (Gmail, Outlook, AOL and more) in one place. Never delete an email again with 1000GB of free cloud storage.

Re: [Avid-L2] Mac permissions issue

Get info on the drive, click the unlock button and enter your password, click the plus button to add administrators or your user profile, set all users to read/write, then click the gear icon and "apply to enclosed items". Give it a minute to change the permissions to all the files and folders. once done, you should be good. if there is a user profile that it can't determine the privileges for, click the minus button for that user and remove it. if that's not the case, then remove it from spotlight indexing.

If you have changed the permissions to 'ignore ownership on this volume' (like Ross suggested) and you are still getting that message, then it MIGHT be you just need to eject it and try again. I've seen this happen (like you are describing) - and I haven't gotten to the bottom of it. For me, when it happens it also won't let me eject the drive. So I shut down the machine. Start up with drive disconnected. Log in to get to the desktop, connect the drive and try to erase files again.
If that fails I'm with you in thinking that the drive has something going wrong on it.

Maybe the drive is going bad.

No, the lock on permissions in the Get Info window does not stay unlocked. You must unlock it every time.

As for NTFS, I suggest checking. It's possible the drive has always been NTFS and what has changed is that your NTFS driver is no longer working.

If none of those things solve the problem, give us some idea what permissions settings in Get Info actually say and maybe we can help further.

[Avid-L2] Stabilizer Effect running Fluidstabilizer in HD vs. 4K mode?

I'm working on a True 4K 4096x2160 project Avid 8.5.2.  The rail camera is a bit unstable so the call is to stabilize many of the shots.  I started re applying the stabilize effect to retrack with the 4K media and replace the effect from offline and discovered the project had been switched to HD.  Not surprisingly with the project set to 4K the stabilize effect takes much longer to track.  It is running at approx. 40 times real time when in 4K.  I haven't done a precise test but it's a lot longer than when I was applying the stabilize with the project in HD.

I don't fully understand what is behind the fluidstabilizer, I just know it works on many shots.  Given the tracking time difference between HD and 4K project settings I assume the tracker is looking at more pixels when in 4K mode but I'm wondering if the difference in tracking time really creates a lot better stabilize effect?  I've seen all kinds of quirky behavior with the stabilize effect that looks fine and some time later I go back and it's displaying the image in a corner of the raster like it was part of a quad split.  I don't know what causes the whacky offset but I'd speculate that perhaps if a project gets changed to say SD that in some instances the stabilizer effect gets something like a scaling offset when it somehow refreshes itself in the odd project format or perhaps when switching back to the intended project format.  It all makes me nervous about unexpected consequences.

Can anybody shed some light on the algorithm behind the stabilize effect and how it might subsequently get effected by project format changes?  I always reapply the stabilizers in online but now I'm curious if theoretically there might time savings to stabilize in HD mode to save time.  My gut says no but figured I'd throw it out to the groups to see what I can learn.
