Re: [Avid-L2] Mac permissions issue

Drive is formatted OS Extended.  Here is an example.  I try to trash two mp4 files I don't need.  I am asked for password.  I do that and get "Item "xxx" is locked. Do you want to move it to the transh anyway?'

I selet continue (choices are skip and stop as well)

Then I get:
The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items.

And this is the same for anything I want to trash.  If I want to drag a file into this drive, it just won't go.  Nothing happens.

All very odd as I say, this has been a workhorse with no issues until last week.

Maybe the drive is going bad.

If that's not it, try disabling permissions entirely on the drive. You do that by getting info on the drive itself and unticking the checkbox at the bottom of the info window.

I recommend this for all project drives unless you happen to be working in a secure facility. Making this change should solve your problem, assuming you have permission to make the change.

No, the lock on permissions in the Get Info window does not stay unlocked. You must unlock it every time.

As for NTFS, I suggest checking. It's possible the drive has always been NTFS and what has changed is that your NTFS driver is no longer working.

If none of those things solve the problem, give us some idea what permissions settings in Get Info actually say and maybe we can help further.

Have you tried the highest rated email app?
With 4.5 stars in iTunes, the Yahoo Mail app is the highest rated email app on the market. What are you waiting for? Now you can access all your inboxes (Gmail, Outlook, AOL and more) in one place. Never delete an email again with 1000GB of free cloud storage.

Re: [Avid-L2] Mac permissions issue

I have had similar issues with portable drives when they were formatted on one system under my 'identity' on that system, then moved to a different system with a different 'identity' (user name & pword)
After I change them to either 'everyone' or my alt ID on the other system and gave myself read/write privileges as well as selected 'apply to enclosed items' it was usually fine on both.

I'm pretty sure the 'lock' reverts to locked mode whenever you close out the 'Get Info'

Disk was not reformatted.  Worked, then it did not.  It checks out as healthy when run through disk utility and disk warrior.  But every time I open info window the lock is locked, even if I unlock and close it.   I thought that was supposed to stay unlocked.    I unchecked the box at bottom but made not difference.  Still can not delete files.

Hi Lou,

Has your drive somehow been reformatted as NTFS? That would make it read-only. The fix for that would be to reformat (if you don't need any of the files on it) or install Paragon NTFS (which will give your Mac the ability to read NTFS drives).
If that's not it, try disabling permissions entirely on the drive. You do that by getting info on the drive itself and unticking the checkbox at the bottom of the info window. You can fix quite a lot of things that way if you don't want to spend time digging through permissions to find an issue.
If you've disabled permissions and the Mac still says that you don't have permission to do things, you should should probably check the health of the volume (in Disk Utility).

I have a 2TB GRaid that is my main content drive for a long project. Recently it seems to be locked all the time for some reason and I can't copy or delete items from it. Not sure how this happened. When I use command I to get info and manually unlock contents, it does nothing. I am told I don't have permission to move items on this drive. I repaired permissions on system drive and ran disk warrior on the GRaid. But still have the problem. It there a way to fix this issue? The drive is not functional if I can move files on and off.

Background

Avid-L was established in 1994 at Calvin College by Steven Koster.
It was created to be a forum for Avid users to meet, discuss, and share
information.

Avid-L quickly grew into the premiere on-line users group for
professional film and video editors. It was one of the earliest examples

of an Internet community, allowing hundreds of editors worldwide to
share their experiences and expertise with their peers. There was no
better place for a professional Avid editor to get such wealth of
informed professional advice.

At various times, individual subscribers volunteered services to the
group. Searchable archives were maintained by Germany's Berlin Users
Group as well as the UIUC. A tips & tricks list was posted by Andy
Birkhead of Innovative Edit. Wes Plate, a longtime contributor, not only

shared key techniques on his Web site, he also created a photo gallery
for members' portraits.

In 1997, several subscribers began a tradition of meeting in person at
the NAB trade show in Las Vegas. The first gatherings were organized by Jaime Fowler. In 1999,
Avid Technology itself began sponsoring these gatherings as an exclusive reception and seminar for Avid-L members only. In 2002, this changed to the "Avid Users Group" meeting.

By 1999, Avid-L boasted over 1600 subscribers, exhibiting a true
international scope with over 300 international members. The community
included participants from a wide variety of well-known corporate
organizations in broadcasting, technical, and content creation fields,
as well as and multiple local TV stations, colleges, and universities.

In 2000, Avid-L joined AvidProNet.com, and then, in 2002, was integrated
Into Avid.com.

In 2005 Due to problems with signal to noise ratio and abusive posters, the Avid-L2 was formed. A year later the Avid-L was discontinued by Avid.

At the middle of 2006, the L2 has around 1100 members, with plenty of "lurker only" members who simply use the web version of the list. The L2 is spam-free, by moderation and with Yahoo's tools and will remain that way. The integrated archives with both old L and L2 posts came on line recently as well at the University of Illinois. That can be found at http://archives.itg.uiuc.edu/avid/.

Cross-posting to the FCP-L is welcome, tho reply's will not flow back to either list necessarily- check your own email reply preferences. The Final Cut list is found at: http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/FinalCutPro-L

Welcome, and Enjoy!

Extras!
With a Yahoo account tied to your subscription to the Avid-L2, you can use the web features of the Group.

Calendar Various Avid events are in the Calender. If you have an event you'd like posted, pull down and fill out the Calendar event request and send it to any Moderator

Database - The database area contains Avid Feature requests, Help Wanted, Freelance Listings and For Sale sections. Feel free to add your listings to any of these areas. Job Postings will remain up for 1 month. Please date all postings to the database areas, being pertinent is a good way to be.

Files- The files section contains various sundry files, including the latest Avid release notes. Check back often for changes.

Photos - Pictures of your Avid setup are welcome, or pictures relating to a post you need a photo to explain. Photos will be posted after moderator approval. Who knows, your picture might grace the front page for a while.

Links- Various helpful links, including direct links to Avid CPR releases can be found here, also the link to the archives.
