RE: [Avid-L2] Does and Avid or any DPX sequence handle audio?

I'm told by the Netflix folks that the facility that is making the IMF file will not accept my Avid DNxHRHQX .mov with 8 channels of audio.  I'm told they will only take .dpx sequences.  This is after I already sent them a DNxHRHQX .mov that they are successfully using for review and to prep the project.  I was also told by the Netflix folks that facikity does use Clipster and that it doesn't handle Avid DNxHRHQX,  which I took to mean Clipster doesn't handle DNxHR codecs.  Can you clarify this for me?  Could it be that DNxHR is a paid option they don't have at the facility or does clipster truly not support the Avid DNxHR codec?

If you are going to Netflix it is likely going via a R&S Clipster and that can read Avid OP Atom files and audio files so you could do a Video Mixdown to a clean drive and try sending them that.

Could save you a lot of time.

As I'm testing the dpx file export on Avid 8.5.2 I'm setting to RGB 10bit keep levels as legal.  Netflix want BT.709 files.  I also checked use selected tracks and I've selected Video and audio 8 channels.  The resulting file when I link ama to the dpx sequence is video only.  I tried a dpx export with only the audio channels selected but I get a prompt that the export format requires video on every frame or some such prompt.  So is dpx an audio less format?  I guess even though Avid has a check box for use marks and one for selected tracks it's probably referring to the video tracks.

What is the standard for including audio for a dpx sequence?

How much cheaper is FCPX when you factor in you must work on a Mac to use it.  PCs are still cheaper and while iMacs are pretty reasonable in price they are still more than a comparable PC aren't they?  The software isn't that much cheaper than Premiere Pro standalone is it.  Oh wait you have to subscribe to Premiere so there's the extra cost.  I guess the cost of the iMac over PC isn't as much as the annual subscription to Premiere would be.  Does Adobe have special pricing for large install of a news room nature.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Firefox tip Videodesktop Software Decklink SDI on does SD?

Upon further testing I downloaded and installed Desktop Video 9.9.2, which is listed as the first version with Mavericks 10.9 support.  It acts just like Desktop Video 10.6 did.  When Avid launches and initializes hardware the card outputs SD.  If I quit avid and set the BM control panel to output black I can then toggle output format and see the scope change.  After quitting Avid the card stays stuck in SD until I toggle the format with it set to output black instead of "last frame."  So the card is working but it will only output SD when Avid has control.  I tried toggling all kinds of Avid project types but no change in behavior.

Is the Desktop Video Control Panel the same thing used with the DNxIO?  I haven't installed mine yet but wondering if the same control panel software, although I'm sure it would be a later version, is what is used to interface Avid to the DNxIO?  It seems all the other Decklink cards work off the same control panel software is DNxIO unique or the same.

I even went back to a normal hd project that works fine on the Decklink SDI on my Mac OS 10.8.5 running Avid 8.4.5 but on the 10.9.5 Avid 8.5.3 drive all I get is SD.  Oh the fun.

No connection issue possible.  This card has 3 bncs on it.  Ref in, SDI IN, SDI OUT.  It works fine on my OS 8.5 startup drive with Avid 8.4.5.  Now that I've ugraded to 10.9.5 I only see SD output from the card.  I do see Avid's video it's just SD.  There's only one output spigot which I haven't changed.  If I was on the Ref or SDI input I would see no signal at all.  Even with Avid not running there is a choice for what format to output and no matter what I toggle that to, in this case 1080P 23.976 the SDI Output is still SD.  This was with Video Desktop 10.6.  I've downloaded all the way back to Video desktop 9.2.3 or so.  I went back downloading each version back from 10.6 stopping at the last one that no longer said it was supported in 10.9.  I think that was around 9.2.3 ish.  I will start with the first version compatible with 10.9 and see what it outputs standalone with no software running and if it will toggle.  Then I'll move on from there.

I remember on mine there was a dedicated down convert SDI output.  Is it possible you are connected to that and not the main HDSDI output?

Just used this trick to download more than 6 streams from a site in firefox.  This is my old post.  However I found and error in my instructions from before.  When you open a new tab type "about:config"  with a colon not "about.config" with a period like I mistyped back when I posted this tip.

I'm downloading every Black Magic Desktop going way back because now that I've upgraded one of my startup drives to Mac OS 10.9.5 I needed to update the video desktop software for my Decklink SDI card.  So far runnin 10.6 will only show SD video out of my True 4K project even when I set the BM Desktop software to 1080P 23.976.  Anybody know the magic receipe for Avid 8.5.3 Mac OS 10.9.5 and a Decklink SDI.  I know this is an old card but when I installed Video desktop 10.6 it did update/flash the Decklink SDI without giving me an error and it did a restart after the install.  I've only tried Avid and it goes to the Video Desktop Software when I hit more in the video output setting so Avid knows it's there it just doesn't seem to want to output anything but SD out the SDI on the output to my scope and monitor.  Tried changing to 1080{ 23.976 in the desktop software but no change on output.  Toggle the actual Avid project to NTSC 23.98 project and HD 1080P 23.976 but still only SD SDI out of the Decklink SDI.

When I fire up my NitrisDX it works fine and spits out HD 1080P 23.976 so I can always go there but I like the decklink because it's quieter in my edit room at home.  I didn't spring for an acoustically isolated rack.  Maybe for Xmas.

I use firefox and I have always found that when I'm trying to download multiple files like from a sound effects library I could only get 6 downloads going at a time.  I thought this was a limitation of the site I was on but tonight I found that there is a setting in firefox that limits the number of simultaneous downloads from the same server.  If you open a new tab and type "about.config" in the address bar you gain access to a ton of setting most of which I will never touch but the one that controls the downloads is:

network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-serverâ€

I set it from 6 to 14 and voila I'm downloading all 14 files from a lesson plan at the same time.  Hope this helps somebody along the way.

[Avid-L2] Panny 4K Varicam35 File format to .dpx?

My current 4K project was shot with multiple Panny Varicam35 cameras.  Here is a Media Info report of the material:
Writing application : Panasonic P2 3.0
Video
ID : 2
Format : AVC
Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile : High 4:2:2 Intra@L5.2
Format settings, CABAC : No
Format settings, GOP : N=1
Format settings, wrapping mode : Frame
Codec ID : 0D010301020E0000
Duration : 2mn 20s
Bit rate : 321 Mbps
Width : 4 096 pixels
Height : 2 160 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 1.896
Frame rate : 23.976 (24000/1001) fps
Standard : Component
Color space : YUV
Chroma subsampling : 4:2:2
Bit depth : 10 bits
Scan type : Progressive
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 1.513
Stream size : 5.24 GiB (98%)
Color range : Limited
Color primaries : BT.709
Transfer characteristics : BT.709
Matrix coefficients : BT.709

From the Panasonic website here are the potential recording formats:
Video Compression Format
AVC‑Intra4K 4:2:2/AVC-Intra100: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 Intra Profile, AVC‑LongG50/AVC‑LongG25: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264

Based on this info they must have shot to the AVC-Intra4K 4:2:2 right?  Given the Format profile  from MediaInfo is "High 4:2:2 Intra@L5.2"  that is what I think.  I'm not sure what the "@L5.2" represents.  I assume that the "Format Settings, GOP : N=1" means the GOP structure is only 1 frame hence the "Intra" all I frame in the Format Profile listing.

So given all this is there any quality reason that the ultimate IMF file has to be made from a .dpx export of the above mentioned material?  The media is never going to be more than it started as from a video quality standpoint.  Color correction may create more subtle image aspects that I suppose would be better maintained exporting to a .dpx file format but I would think that would be virtually undetectable to the viewer.

This leads to crux of my curiosity in that I'm required to create a .dpx from the above material so that can be used to create the ultimate IMF file.  I have been told indirectly that the IMF file will be made using Clipster and I've also been told indirectly, meaning not by the actual facility making the IMF, that Clipster can not make an IMF from an Avid DNxHRHQX file format.  Can anyone confirm this?

It just doesn't make sense to me that given the original source material I don't see how Avid DNxHRHQX would be in any way deteriorating the image quality.  I would think it's basically maintaining everything that's in the original material.  So is it just that that Clipster can't handle a DNxHR codec, which seems strange to me, or am I once again dealing with the McDonald's "I don't have a button for that and I've never done it that way mentality?"  The facility that will make the IMF is no small shop so I really doubt that but I've never worked on a Clipster so I don't know all it's capabilities.  Could it be like many hardware/software solutions that DNxHR codec capability is a paid option for Clipster?  Given the separate QC facility is unwilling to take 5 minutes to load the Avid LE codecs to QC the file and is requiring me to make prores I'm just getting fed up with these "Service Companies" providing a service but not being of service in even a minimal way to us the client.  We are also dealing with preferred vendor status requirements which are anything but preferred on our end.  Our normal QC facility is willing to do anything we need to QC our file in the hopes to gain preferred vendor status.  Sadly the preferred vendor we are dealing with, at least for initial QC is just the opposite.
