[Avid-L2] Re: Suggest audio component(s) for 5.1 monitoring?

Yes, video monitoring through the receiver's HDMI video out. Fortunately, the iMac sees it as an additional monitor so it can be positioned and adjusted that way.

In Avid, I set the HDMI monitor as my full screen playback.

I would prefer monitoring using my secondary Thunderbolt Mac Cinema Display, but I'm out of Thunderbolt ports! I can see how an IO box from AJA could be useful, but I think this system is good to ride for another year or so... maybe till the end of the Thunderbolt reign.

Re: [Avid-L2] working directly with Avid mxf files in other programs

Suggestion: instead of recording to 1:1 and transcoding, just record directly to ProRes MXF. Then you can export same-as-source, and it will be a rewrap to MOV.

Is there a way to skip the "export to Qt" step and work directly with the mxf "capture" files? (1 video & 2 audio in Premiere for example?)

No luck thus far with Premiere CC ("The importer reported a generic error"). I posted this on Creative Cow and one suggestion was exporting an AAF... in Premiere CC an empty seq will come in but no media and same error when I try to relink. Someone else suggested "Calibrated{Q} XD - Snow Leopard" probably should not expect it to work on a Mac running 10.8.5

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

[Avid-L2] Re: Suggest audio component(s) for 5.1 monitoring?

How does this effect your video monitoring.  I'm assuming the BMD UltraStudio Mini Monitor was providing a video signal to a program monitor.  Are you know monitoring video thru the receiver?  I would think that this would require the use of full screen mode on the mini-display port to HDMI output.  Am I missing something here.

Removed the BMD UltraStudio Mini Monitor (and drivers) and replaced it with a simple mini-display-port-to-HDMI cable, connecting the iMac to the Denon 500AV preamp.

Launched the "Audio MIDI Setup" app in utilities and selected "DN-500AV," then used the "configure speakers" function to create SMPTE 5.1 channel order (L, R, C, LFE, SL, SR).

In MC7 I set the output to 5.1 Direct Out SMPTE.

Happy moment to solo each track and hear the proper sound come out of the proper speaker!!

I totally appreciate that Avid MC is facility-level software, and why post facilities have engineers on staff!! Having it available to a one-man-shop like me is great but there is no dodging the investment of time, and reaching out to serious pros on the L2, to make... things... work!

Thanks!

Re: [Avid-L2] I'm an editor, just shoot me

I don't doubt the efficacy of creating cut down versions of trailers for social media or some other purpose. I've been paid by studios to cut 10 second and even 7 second versions of trailers, but it was by the studio who paid for the original versions to be made and I was paid to do the work ( NOT 50 cents each). I think I made 10 for $1000, but I was able to do them all in one day. So if the guy wanted to pay $50 each, that would definitely be doable. But not $50 for 100. And not at the risk of being sued for copyright infringement.

[Avid-L2] Re: Suggest audio component(s) for 5.1 monitoring?

Right. Returning to this subject, as deadlines now loom, and still needing to monitor 5.1 on my late 2014 iMac w/10.8.5 and MC 7.03, I finally voted with my wallet and went with Job's suggestion and purchased the Denon DN-AV500 (~900 USD), and instead of trying the AJA T-Tap he suggested I went with the BMD UltraStudio Mini Monitor (driver 10.2.1) that I already had.

The Denon is a great receiver and surround pre-amp, no remorse there. The problem is in getting my 5.1 SMPTE (L, R, C, Lfe, SL, SR) to come out in the proper speakers. Would the AJA T-Tap be better at this IO?

I've been working on this for hours, in a variety of configurations (in MC7, straight SMPTE, SMPE Direct Out, Audio Midi Interface variations)... MC clearly sees and implements the BMD UltraStudio Mini Monitor, but the Audio Midi interface sees only 2 channels of output from it, though it will happily map 5.1 speaker output correctly to my ear and speaker.  It just doesn't play that way in MC.

Bottomline, with the BMD UltraStudio Mini Monitor on, the center channel is currently coming out the LFE.

Any help or suggestions very deeply appreciated!

Roberto

Re: [Avid-L2] MC 8.3.1 dual display bug

Same basic issue on Yosemite. On open windows in MC, often I can't click on a clip or other item in the window, as the cursor "sees through" the bin and connects with the open window beneath. As a result, I find myself having to drag windows clear of other panes, or move dialogues aside just to be able to get into them. Very, very frustrating and stupid.

Unit 1 is always CHARGE for your work.

How to always get PAID for your work is still beyond me after 33 years of editing. Occasionally  involves lawyers or hells angels... Way outside the scope of a three year film course.

This would simply act as material to be used in a curriculum to teach editing like any other material like those purchased from Editstock. The only difference is at the end it can be used as a reel for the student.

The first gig (the unpaid one) from the Master guy could be interesting if he offered the series  to a college media program as part of an editing curriculum where students could build a reel while learning their craft. The end result is that they could be graded on the project. Perhaps someone should suggest it.
