Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Semi OT: Screen sharing with clients

Team Viewer is fast enough that I have actually edited remotely using
it. It's not very elegant, but it can be done.... Sometimes the video
playback can be a little choppy depending on your internet connection.

I'd suggest:

Have you looked into 'LogMeIn'? It's like what Timbuktu used to be, only much easier to use. It's a website or dedicated software (your choice) that's installed on both client and server. Available for both Mac and PC and each is cross-platform so you can control and/or see the other computer remotely. It's actually intended for tech support where a technician looks at and controls another computer remotely. What you need is the reverse: You want your producer to watch your computer screen (and not control it). There are options for that capability as well with LogMeIn (View Only) called 'Share Your Desktop'. If you have more than one computer display, he or she can choose which of your desktop screens to view. The only limitation is that the free version cannot transmit audio.
<https://secure.logmein.com/products/pro/>
The free version is the one I use. But I don't think it's adequate for your needs. You need audio transmission:
<https://secure.logmein.com/comparisonchart/comparisonFPP.aspx>
It's done as a yearly subscription; $70 per year for 1 computer (You might need a 2-computer subscription, I don't know).
BTW, I'm using LogMeInFree to write this message right now. I'm actually working at a different computer from the one I'm writing with.

You might want to test Team Viewer. It can get through firewalls and is cross platform. I'm not sure if it updates fast enough to play down a timeline though. You can try it for free and it's very easy to install and run. For dual monitor setups it lets you choose which monitor to look at. In theory it could show you both kinda like mac screen sharing but I've never got that to work for some reason.

I hooked a SlingBox up to my Avid output for the same reason... In reality, the lag was a bit of an issue, typically they were around five seconds behind me.

Try VLC player.
It can stream, not difficult to set up. (Either push or pull)
However, i doubt it's easy to grab the Avid window and encode that. If you have output that you can feed to another machine to do the encode / transmit, that will be way easier.
Oh, it's free.

Thanks, Dom.

Having the GUI would be nice, but no, not necessary. The playback window would suffice.

Are you looking for rt collaborative editing where your client can see your GUI in real time or just your playback window (be it source or timeline) in real time?

[Avid-L2] Semi OT: Screen sharing with clients

Does anybody have any recommendations for screen sharing with remote clients?

I work remotely from my clients and the majority of the time I export quicktime files and use either yousendit, dropbox or vimeo to post cuts for approval.

Recently though, I have one client with whom I want to actually work collaboratively while I edit. I've tried Webex but it doesn't support my dual monitor Symphony so I have to rearrange all my windows onto one monitor. It also doesn't recognize the Matrox mini for audio output so I've been using Skype on my iPad camera pointed at the video monitor with the volume turned up to monitor the editing. Not exactly and elegant solution and Skype has a tendency to freeze when traffic gets high.

I know about Avid Sphere, but that is geared towards much bigger post houses and not a one man cutting indie doc features. Way out of my price range.

I even considered bailing on Avid and going to Adobe after 22 years on Avid systems but Adobe Anywhere is only available on Premiere enterprise solutions. (or at least that's what I was told on Creative Cow). I'm relieved, because I really like cutting on Avid and don't want to abandon ship at this stage of the game.

I know FCP7 had the cinema output (or whatever it was called). But I was never really comfortable cutting long form with hundreds of hours of mixed format material in Final Cut.

I can't seem to find any solutions out there. It seems to me that with all the cloud based collaborative solutions someone would address the needs of the smaller shops which must be numerous at this point.

Anybody else faced with his problem? Any suggested solutions? Fuze, AFrame etc all seem to only deal with exported clips. Is there no affordable streaming solution?

Thanks

well, my ' offloader' does the transcode to DNxHD (and Prores from memory)
But, there is indeed a difference. And this thread is a week old at least...

BulletProof isn't just an offloader. Red Giant marketingspeak: "BulletProof is a complete offload, prep and delivery solution that bridges the gap, with a workflow that simplifies how you handle footage every day. Import, backup, organize, color, deliver: BulletProof has your back at every step. Review footage on the fly, make a first color pass, safely back up those clips"
http://www.redgiant.com/products/all/bulletproof/features/#tabs

Bouke's stuff is cool, but I don't think he has anything like BulletProof (and I know he'll correct me if I'm wrong).
http://www.videotoolshed.com/products

But do you need/want everything BulletProof tries to do, does it do those things well, and does it fit into and improve your workflow? I can't answer that question for myself yet
