Re: [Avid-L2] RGB QT export

Hi Chris:

When I try to render out of After Effects to an uncompressed Avid
10-bit codec, the option for selecting Trillions of Colors (10-bit
output) is greyed out and can't be selected. This seems to be true for
both uncompressed 10bit and RGB uncompressed 10-bit Avid codecs. I
can't remember now whether I've tried with DNxHD 10-bit codecs --
probably not.
It's possible to hack the After Effects preferences file so the
Trillions of colors option is selectable, but this doesn't change the
actual contents of the quicktime output.
I don't know if this is an Avid issue or After Effects -- although,
I've recently run into problems getting Baselight to recognize
quicktimes using the AvidPacked and RGBPacked codes, which is a pretty
big coincidence...

It would be worth trying the following if TIFF/PNG file sequences are
not an option: output to Kona/Blackmagic 10-bit uncompressed codecs, and
bring those into Avid via AMA. Might work, but I wouldn't trust it
without testing it.

Cheers,
--Michael

Re: [Avid-L2] RGB QT export

According to Michael after effects does not recognize Avid 10bit codecs (packed). Maybe that doesn't apply to dnx but it does correlate with some banding and etc I've seen getting 1:1 10 bit from ae to composer.

Would be great to get confirmation or denial.

At any rate, composer should really be able to import 10bit material from any legitimately installed 10 bit codec.

Re: [Avid-L2] RGB QT export

If you use Avid's own 10 bit QT codec and "Fast Import" those, it will
maintain the 10 bit format.
16 bit TIFF images can also be imported as 10 bit media.

All other codecs will be truncated to 8 bit. It will remain in a 10 bit
MXF container but the media itself will only have 8 bit information.

So Michael, if I read this right you are saying there is no way to any sort of QuickTime out of after effects for Avid import and stay 10 bit.

Correct?

Wow! Is this an Adobe or Avid problem (codec)?

Well I haven't even made it to the convention but if you happen to make it to the Circus Circus Hotel in the amusement park area the Sponge Bob in 4D was interesting to me. Full tilt rumbling chairs and air blasts and bubbles are what makes it 4D I guess. The 3D was fine for the limited 6 minute feature but I don't know if the glasses over my progressive glasses make it harder for me. I definitely had the 3D effect as I watched the $8.00 leave my wallet and go into the cash register. What the heck I'm in Vegas after all and it's a write off for research right?

Re: [Avid-L2] RGB QT export

Hi Nigel:

When I was testing this out originally, I was having other issues
with AMA imports, so I don't think I tested it in the same way. It may
well be that AMA import does preserve the 10-bits. The following reply
which I got back then from Michel Rynderman at Avid certainly implies
that it might:

> When you import (not AMA) the imported video from a 10bit third party
> codec will always be truncated to 8 bit. When you import the Avid
> RGBPacked you should be able to see it do a "fast import" in which case
> it just copies the entire frame preserving all 10 bits

When I think about it, I find it hard to believe that AMA linking to
R3D files, for instance, would be considered acceptable if it was only
bringing in 8 bits of info.

Cheers,

Hi Nigel:

When I was looking into this a few months ago, Avid confirmed that
all third-party 10-bit codecs were truncated to 8 bit on both import and
export. With quicktime, the only way to preserve 10 bits in and out was
through fast-import of Avid-codec quicktimes and Same-as-source
exports. The other option was to use 16-bit TIFF file sequences, which
was what worked best for my circumstances. I am currently working on
5.0.3.x, and that release stills seems to truncate in the same way.

In terms of confirming whether your export is 10-bit or not, you
could bring your clips into After Effects and check what it reports when
you select the item in the footage window. It will identify 10-bit
footage as having Trillions of Colours (vs Millions for 8-bit.)
However, this won't show you if your footage has been truncated to 8
bits within the 10-bit range. You would need to do some testing with
test patterns to confirm that. The other problem with After Effects, is
it doesn't seem to recognize Avid's 10-bit codecs (AvidPacked and
RGBPacked) as having 10 bits, only 8. One reason why TIFF sequences
work better for me for 10-bit file exchange.

[Avid-L2] RGB QT export

So we AMA to 4:4:4 prores QT and then want to export as RGB uncompressed QT.
This all works except I wanted to confirm it was actually a 10 bit file and
not 8 bit. How do we do this.. We have used mediainfo usually for finding a
file spec but while it gives bits for some formats it doesn't for others
including prores..

How can we confirm it's a 10 bit file if indeed it is?

Thanks

N
