Re: [Avid-L2] Main Thread Bus Error is back

The app launches. Just during the rebuilding process would I get the
error. When I take all firewire and usb offline the rebuild works and
app is open. My main Media drives are a Caldigit Raid so I can't
split them up one by one.

There are OMFI folders on the firewire drives and I have seen flakey
behavior with Avid and firewire drives in the past so this may be the
issue with this system. I am relabeling all OMFI folders in all but
my CalDigit to make sure Avid does not try and read them.

Re: [Avid-L2] Main Thread Bus Error is back

Yea, but right now you want to know if the system is screwed or if
it's the media drives or the media. First step, will the application
launch when no drives are attached. If it does, then add one drive at
a time to find the offender.

Could rebuild the data bases if I take all firewire and usb drives
offline. I will go into those and see if there are random OMF files
that are screwing things up.

[Avid-L2] Main Thread Bus Error is back

As some of you will remember this basically shut down my MacBook Pro.
Avid tech could not resolve. Now its showing up on a brand new
system. I wanted to rebuild media data bases so I trashed them. Now
Avid won't boot up as early in the rebuild stage, I get the "Bus
error" message. Several attempts and standard trouble shooting does
not seem to work. Any suggestions?

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: missing locators in EDL?

Oh, it does dump the locators on the group clips. The locators on non-
group clips is fine. So we just need to do commit multicam before we
put those locators on.

Thanks for all the help.

Re: [Avid-L2] Avid /fcp red

We always bake in to PRZ with a best light grade using REDCineX and a
RR card, that's about RT or less. We then finish with Scratch that now
uses RR cards. However with our Feature Projects less than 1% get to a
Theatre and generally end up on DVD or cable, so we just use the PRZ
back into color and that's it, the decision wether we use Scatch or
Lustre is really decided on what the deliverables are. We will also
decide what quality PRZ, if it looks like a dog, we would make a
decision to go PRZ 4:4:4.

I have not done any speed tests on the RR card, going out to DNxHD,
but it would be the same workflow.

The Holly Grail, is to have an edit system that debayers the RED code
on the fly, no transcoding required. DS has just announced support for
this, but IMHO, it's too expensive. If the other players like Apple,
do not offer such a solution, RED/Assimilate will. REDCineX already
has the engine and you can do crude P&C now. That's your cue Oliver.

Maybe it would work with a sequence with locators already in. It would just eliminate the group clips but I don't know if that would necessarily nuke the locators if they were placed on the group clip. Let us know what you find out.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: missing locators in EDL?

Ok, that's cool and will be useful. I just have to do it to a
sequence BEFORE I put locators all over it as the locators don't carry
over.

Thank you for the guidance.

[Avid-L2] Re: missing locators in EDL?

All the console command does is enable the ability to right click on a highlighted sequence in a bin and choose Commit Multi cam edits. It only effects the highlighted sequence and it creates a new sequence with the suffix .no groups leaving the original sequence alone. If there are no group clips in the sequence it leaves it alone and tells you nothing is changed. This feature is always available in ver 4.x as a right click option.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: missing locators in EDL?

John,

Sorry I'm getting back to this so late. But thank you for replying.
So if I run that command do you know if that will just effect the
loaded sequence or does this undo all the group clips in the whole
project?

I'm cautious about console commands.

Thanks,
Jay

[Avid-L2] Re: Green Bar At Bottom Of Timeline On Symphony

I hope this doesnt come through twice... Yahoo is acting weird.

Anyway, thanks Chris for responding. Bummer that I cant get someoinformation on this system as I am sure they will run into headaches when and if they decide to upgrade to 4.x and higher. The dongle just wont allow it. If you do chat with them again, have them reach out so we can rectify it sooner than later and prevent any downtime.

As for this prelimianry feature, it was added to the dognle code so developers could work with it. That was many years ago. I am sure there are a few others in the code somewhere but the ones I do know of are dongle based. No commands of any kind can open them unless the software is cracked :( which we know people don't do ;)

As for sharing - sorry but there is no way I am opening that kimono.

Well, if you go the MC->DS route, you have total conform.
Other than that, I'd say whatever you prefer. Which should be Avid. ;-)

[Avid-L2] Re: SRW-5500 Closed Captioning

I assume you're talking about SD signals. I don't recall being able to see VITC or CC in HD signals. For HD Cc is part of the Vanc line 009,572. That metadata is a bit stream and doesn't show up as visible white and black bars at the top of the screen to the best of my knowledge. Please educate me if this is wrong. Sadly my JVC multiformat monitor has no prevision for HV delay so I haven't been able to use it. I have to go by my tek wfm 7020 to see the closed captioning once the scope decodes it. CC is definitely one area that HD has become problematic than the SD counterpart.

[Avid-L2] Re: SRW-5500 Closed Captioning

I recall being told by Sony that the "J" series does not have blanking controls in the menu.  I don't have  JH3 to confirm this.  When I was talking with Sony it was regarding a J30SDI but they said sense it wan't considered necessary to have blanking controls on that series of decks.  I know of one facility that offers closed captioning services and they said after closed captioning an HD master they could not just clone from their JH3 and maintain CC.  They would just reencode to make extra copies.  Same number of machines but it ties up the CC encoder for every copy.  I checked with Sony after hearing that and they confirmed that the blanking is always wide open on the JH-3.  They also added that it is critical to have sync to both the decks when cloning.  According to them even though the record deck will lock to incoming video without sync there can be enough jitter to mess up the CC metadata if both decks aren't locked to the same
reference.  I'll admidt I find the need for sync a bit odd but that is what Sony tech support suggests and they should know, right?  Bottom line Sony says you should be able to clone with CC if both decks have sync fed to them.

well, putting your monitor in HV delay should give you a bit of more info...
(besides the running VITC you should see some CC as well if blanking is off.
If blanking is on, you'll see nothing..)

But i'm in PAL and my CC knowledge is (although better than most eropeans),
very little.

I recall being told by Sony that the "J" series does not have blanking
controls in the menu. I don't have JH3 to confirm this. When I was
talking with Sony it was regarding a J30SDI but they said sense it wan't
considered necessary to have blanking controls on that series of decks. I
know of one facility that offers closed captioning services and they said
after closed captioning an HD master they could not just clone from their
JH3 and maintain CC. They would just reencode to make extra copies. Same
number of machines but it ties up the CC encoder for every copy. I checked
with Sony after hearing that and they confirmed that the blanking is always
wide open on the JH-3. They also added that it is critical to have sync to
both the decks when cloning. According to them even though the record deck
will lock to incoming video without sync there can be enough jitter to mess
up the CC metadata if both decks aren't locked to the same reference. I'll
admidt I find the need for sync a bit odd but that is what Sony tech support
suggests and they should know, right? Bottom line Sony says you should be
able to clone with CC if both decks have sync fed to them.

Well, if you go the MC->DS route, you have total conform.

[Avid-L2] Avid /fcp red

Am I correct in thinking that the best way to offline red in FCP is to
convert to prores and in which case if you are onlining on another box
DS/smoke then the process and time is pretty much the same whichever of Avid
or FCP you use. Either transcode to prores or Dnx depending. So there is no
real workflow advantage in one over the other?

Thanks

Sorry for the trouble. Indeed we've had some other reports of memory
problems in this area and we are currently working on some improvements to
be posted in a BCC update in the near future.

Would you mind sending me your sequence offline (or even a sub-sequence
containing the Pan and Zoom problem areas) ? We'd be very interested in
taking a close look at it and running it through render tests etc. I think
you've already provided enough info in your message that we would be able to
use our own replacement media and graphics to test the sequence. Thanks, and
when we post an update I'll make sure to announce it on the list.

[Avid-L2] Re: effects won't render

When this happened to me in the past someone here suggested me to break the sequence into parts so the rendered effects wouldn't exceed the 2GB.
So the way to do it is separating your sequence with the "create an edit" option, H in your keyboard. Break it every 10 minutes or so and render the portions you created. That will do it.

Those who are in the know are not allowed to discuss it. And Avid does not
set timelines on qualifications. I'm under the impression that they are in
fact testing Win 7 configurations, so it should be pretty much around the
corner.
