[Avid-L2] SRW-5500 Closed Captioning

Hi all

Anyone know the setting for the SRW-5500 in order to preserve CC coming from
a J-H3 player?
The dubs we are making are not preserving the CC.

TIA-
Dom Q. Silverio

[Avid-L2] Windows 7

Anyone know what the timeline is for Avid qualification of Windows 7? If
it's around the corner I'll hold off on any further Vista R&D. I have MC
4.0.3 running on Windows 7 with seemingly no issues (though I haven't
done much with it).

Anyone from Avid qualification dept listening?

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Canon D5.... And i need a favour.

Syncing audio will be a a lot of work, since the framerate will differ.
And of course there will be a time difference due to the slow down.
But nothing visible to the eye if you aint got very long shots.
(and if you have, you can always change the duration of the audio a bit in a
piece of silence).

I'm currently making some more tools to do syncing with Canon cams.
Dual system audio can of course work with LTC on the cam, but that kinda
sucks as the audio input will break down.
You can in fact 'lock' a Canon to a video cam or a BWF recorder, or vice
versa.
(No genlock, but timecode identical)
It won't be as perfect as with LockIt boxes, but it will get you very close.

BUT, for that to work i need some help.
I'm searching a lot of .THM files to analtyze test.
So if someone has a Canon, i would appreciate if you could set it to still
images/burst mode (as fast as possible), shoot a couple of seconds of stills
and mail me the resulting .THM files. (I don't need the images, i'm after
the metadata in the THM's)

I'm about to launch an updated site where i will blog (a bit)
This workflow shall be my first (and probably second) entry.

Don't you just bring in the footage frame for frame (ie don't blend or frame
rate convert) and accept the slight slow down?
Syncing audio is an issue of course.

Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Green Bar At Bottom Of Timeline On Symphony

Yes, it's a funny one isn't it? I'd never seen it before, in all my
years of working on the Symphony... Sadly, it was on a machine I was
working on last week down in London, so I don't have that information
I'm afraid.

Is it something that could've been 'unlocked' by a console command? I
can't help wondering what other hidden little gems there are 'under
the hood' that we don't know about...

Care to share anything Marianna?

Best,

Re: [Avid-L2] BCC Pan & Zoom Render Limitation

Welcome to 32 bit world.
12GB means very little when the application can only utilize 4GB at best.

Sub sequence and render. Combine after rendering.

All pan and zoom type FX (Boris, Avid, StageTools, FCP) will run in to
the memory issue.

[Avid-L2] BCC Pan & Zoom Render Limitation

I'm cutting a project that has 44 DSLR stills that need pan and zoom. The native DSLR file resolution is 2784 x 1848 and I've imported 1080p versions of the stills to serve as placeholders on the timeline for the Boris effects. It's a 1080p/29.97 project and the 44 stills are each on screen for 10 seconds.

The Problem:

I can't render more than 24 BCC Pan and Zoom effects without running out of memory. I have a fully-Avid qualified HP Z800 with 12 GB of RAM -- and it has locked-up or crashed every time I try to render these effects.

I have changed my workflow to include video mixdowns of the moves after they've been rendered. But has anyone else found themselves running out of RAM with this many BCC Pan and Zoom effects on their timeline?

Geez, I'm lucky I'm not Ken Burns -- then I'd really be in trouble!

Re: [Avid-L2] effects won't render

Change your destination drive and/or turn off the "same as source" button.

If possible, render directly to the internal drive in the format of the
sequence.

There may be database corruptions on the external drives, preventing
them from updating.. this will help you know.

RE: [Avid-L2] effects won't render

Have you tried rendering them individually? Are any of them Boris effects?
I've run into Boris effects that wouldn't render. You could even put a
submaster on the track above and render that, and it would still leave a red
line over the effect. I think for those I had to take the effect off,
reapply and set it up again from scratch.

I've never run into more than one at a time, but on such a long show there
might be more.

Check out the ProLost.com blog. Stu has a few posts (months back) that discuss how to set the camera for a flatter look, which will be easier to grade. Also read EVERYTHING on Philip Bloom's blog about this camera.

The 5D ONLY shoots 30fps progressive. There is a firmware update rumored to come early this year to offer more speeds, but no dates given. The steps to convert/sync depend on NLE to be used.

Do you mean the Canon EOS 5D Mark II? There are plenty of workflow tips all over the web. Michael Phillips and Bouke just recently discussed a few Avid-related tips here on the L2 a couple of weeks ago. I forget the thread, but check back through the messages. I'll post a detailed blog entry in about a week. More FCP-centric, but I cover Avid, too.

As a DIT, what are your responsibilities? This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. There's little you can do to set up the cameras. Basically all you can do is copy cards to drives. Are you being asked to do more than this? Like do ingest/conversion? Sync double-system sound?

Usually corrupt FX - tends to happen with nested, complex layers, 3rd

Re: [Avid-L2] life as an editor

I disagree.

We were at the circus when the elephants arrived, with someone saying "this will be an easy show".
Only to discover later that they had put an Indian elephant in with the African elephants.
Understanding how the two types get along was crucial in our ability to get them to act well together.
We put the fancy costumes on them.

We put the elephants in order for them to walk into the big tent.
Then we hand them off to the ring Master, who gets to wear the fancy outfit.
He walks into the big tent with all of the applause.
We go to the dining hall and eat dinner with the clowns.

I offer:

Since you brought it up James, I have a BVU-950 without a cabinet that
sorta works but the control panel does not operate. It would be good
as a parts machine or if the control panel could be fixed, it might be
fully functional. If anyone is interested, please let me know. I'd
hate to throw out this once high-quality U-Matic VCR.
I have some old stereo equipment I'm trying to clear out as well. I'm
compiling a detailed list to be revealed soon.

[Avid-L2] Re: Green Bar At Bottom Of Timeline On Symphony

Hi Christopher,

What you are seeing is the Performance Track (similar to the DS's ribbon) which was an experimental feature from many years ago. It was never released to the public! So this feature would only shows up with a developer dongle or a dongle that got burned in some weird way.

I tried to look you up in our system here at Avid but didn't see anything with your name or email attached to any records which could just be me or it wasn't registered when you got it.

Could you please send me your system ID off list for the Symphony so I can check this for you. Again,it is possible that you got a developer dongle by some weird mistake on our part which will hinder any upgrading of the system moving forward. In other words you will be stuck where you are.

Happy to help….

I wish they didn't have the U-matic decks listed there. We still have a

Actually, this is from the article:

"The first questions were about the studio (which I covered above), and about the Lake Forest and the Las Vegas "RED Ranch" locations. The plan is to move most operations to Las Vegas, but an Orange County presence will remain, as not everyone can or will relocate to Vegas."

No idea.

I thought particularly interesting were comments regarding REDCINE-X. Essentially, they don't want to make a free grading app to compete with partners. Hence, doubtful that it would ever get secondaries. I think one could also infer from these comments that RED isn't going to turn REDCINE-X into an NLE.

I'm guessing it's like those little strips of colour that appear in
the timecode track of the timeline on MC, to say whether or not the
Avid thinks it'll be able to deal with a portion of the timeline in
real-time...

But like I said, I don't see ANYTHING in the Symphony documentation.
