[Avid-L2] Re: Safe color black doesn't match from Mac to PC

In my case I would take a rendered safe color limit and it would be fine until it became unrendered.  I assume you are looking at an unrendered safe color.  If you render it the levels will stay okay until things become unrendered.

It seems it is how the Avid hardware interprets the black level clip value vs 3rd party hardware.

What are the default values of the on the various systems when you first apply the safe color.  Also what hardware was on the Mac?  In my experience 3rd party hardware wants a black clip of 0 or +.01 while Avid wants the 7.5 value.

Going between two PCs, 1 with Nitric DX, 1 with BM card, blacks come in the same. Open that sequence in Mac, boom, blacks lifted. It's a Mac vs PC thing. Just apply the effect in PC and you se the number 7.5 for black. Apply the same effect on Mac and it reads 0 for black. So of course moving between platforms is going to cause an issue.

I'd bet PCs act the same way Macs do in this regard but I don't trust my gut on this.

The black lift is just an added bonus to the whole Cluster Flop.  I think the root of the issue stems from the choice to add 7.5 IRE black level that differed from the NTSC of Japan 3 IRE level.  I think what ever the mechanism was to facilitate that back in the day isn't implemented in a similar manner with 3rd party IO.

Seems like kinda basic stuff that could be rewritten to work better in this day and age.

Oh wait when I right click on the black clip setting I see an option to "Fix This Feature for 3rd Party" or "Pay Out Executive Bonuses."  Unfortunately the "Fix This Feature" option seems to be greyed out!!!

Oh wait the Six Million Dollar Man just came on Antenna TV, gotta watch it now.

We are going to test if it's third party vs system differences. And yes, I am aware of the black lift, we see that also.
