So we're all agreed then: just use TextWrangler. It's a vastly superior text editor, and it's free.
I love TextWrangler, but I use TextEdit 99% of the time. TextEdit is "Rich Text" editor that is capable of plain text. It is simple and fast. TextWrangler is a plain text editor. Can't do Rich Text. It is powerful, not simple. Each to it's own purpose. Like Quicktime (of old), TextEdit is more powerful and flexible than it appears. It is worth understanding it's features.
My favorite TextWrangler feature: Drag and drop a folder from Finder into a TextWrangler document to get a full text listing of the folder tree for everything in that folder.
