[Avid-L2] GPU upgrade for Mac Pro 3,1 running Media Composer 7

hi all
apologies for the crosspost. i'm in the need of a GPU bump on my early 2008 mac pro (2x3ghz Quad Core Xeon / 32 gb ram / os x 10.8.5) that's hosting a Avid Nitris DX running MC 7.0.4 and After Effects CS6) and i'm looking for some real world advice. i've snooped around quite a bit, am now familiar with the options available to me: PC cards that work but will sacrifice the boot screen due to lack of EFI support; older mac compatible cards that aren't that much more horsepower than my current NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB (which is just not quite enough for Element 3D and some other After Effects related tasks on the same machine); or newer cards like the Sapphire 7950 3GB GDDR5 Mac Edition, which some people say works but that the manufacturer and vendors like OWC say doesn't. budget doesn't have the wiggle room for a newer Mac Pro, and i can't take the plunge for the newest Mac Pro anytime soon. my current system is running well overall, but it's bogging down with some heavier after effects use.
any help would be appreciated. i've searched all of the forums and usual places, and found a lot of useful info, but no lightbulb moment.
cheers
bruce
