Have you tried the Title tool in Avid FX(aka Boris Red).
There is more functionality than Marquee, lots of animation, 3D extrusion and
a whole lot of templates. And you don't have to leave Avid to use it.

Lynda.com has a "chapter" on Marquee in their Media Composer Tutorial. It's just the basics though.
Live Type was actually much better. Too bad it's not around. I'm actually considering learning Motion and using that for titles and exporting then importing into Media Composer. Not sure how efficient it would be,
After effects is an alternative but I mostly do docs and I don't have enough call for it to justify that amount of money to buy CS5.x
