none of this happens on the desktop level. None of that information gets changed at all. If it comes in, for example, on an SxS card, that card is copied to a RAID precisely as it is on the card, no changes other than to put it in a folder named after the card it came from, let's say it's 150711_PSC1_01 - date, camera designation and card number - we make a folder called that and do a direct copy into that folder from the card. This is the new master media from which Avid will mount the AMA volume. Now we go through the process outlined below adding the tape number etc. all the way through to re-mounting the volume and adding a tape number to the AMA clips inside the Avid. This is all that's required to relink, you don't need to alter the media outside of Avid at all and indeed it can be dangerous to do so as you risk upsetting the very precise file structures that Avid needs to use AMA in the first place. I've spent many an hour re-building file structures in Sony Clip Browser after a helpful cameraman decided to copy just the .MP4 files instead of the whole lot. I hope this answers your question, is that what you were asking?
Cheers,
Andi

hi Andi, thanks for that. Understand within the Avid changes, was wondering outside, on the desktop level, working with the AMA clips - do you change the volume folder, each clip, or both?

We rarely use this workflow as, like you, we prefer to work with our media on the ISIS or locally, although we've moved away from transcoding to DNx resolution and just online in the native XDCAM codec. As long as it's not Long GOP the Avids handle it fine and you save a shed load on storage space, which is essential when you're working with the huge volumes of footage we're getting nowadays and we don't do hardly any effects work so it holds up fine for our purposes. I would add this step at the front of the workflow too i.e. Mount AMA volume, modify source THEN transcode. saves you adding it in later or accidentally mislabelling clips after the fact. HTH.

To the volume folder? To each individual clip? Where are you adding the tape # so it will relink?

With the XDCAM EX, open your AMA bins and transcode to your offline resolution. Add a tape number to the offline res clips that relates to the card that the footage was shot on so that you can track it back at conform - date, camera number and roll number works well. Then when ready to online put your sequence in a bin on its own, show reference clips to reveal the clips in the sequence and their unique tape numbers then mount the volumes you need. Now add the same tape number to the AMA clips and relink the sequence. HTH

I recently worked on a project where I had great difficulty getting the finished sequence to link to the media so it could be transcoded for online. I had to manually open each AMA volume and relink the original bin containing all the file based media master clips. Then I was able to relink the sequence. I also had to manually modify the Canon DSLR clips to enter timecode which was lost in Symphony 5.5. The programme was offlined on a Media Composer 5.0.
