actually, DPX has space for this. 1 MB for user defined data.
That's more than enough for 16 channels of high quality uncompressed sound...
But now to create a new standard :-)

Well they could have implemented a form of Dolby E which encoded 8 channels of audio into a digital stream divided up into frame chunks.
Add each chunk of audio to its DPX still frame. Job done.
Then the joys of the frame delay when decoding but not an issue if done in non real time.
