Actually I have never found PCs to be cheaper than Macs when you compare apple-to-apple on an equivalent machine like an HP. But you can build up a beefier machine on the PC side. However, since most editors I've encountered prefer cutting on Macs, it's a non-issue.
The software is $300 for FCPX and if you add a bunch of extra apps and plug-ins you *might* drive that up to just under $2K. Most of these are through the Mac App Store, so it's a one-time expense for as many machines as you personally own (companies are one license per machine).
Premiere standalone would be $20/month forever. Although most folks probably get a full CC license, since they usually also want at least After Effects and Photoshop. And yes, Adobe sells as individual, team and enterprise plans. So schools, broadcasters, etc. would likely be enterprise accounts with different pricing. The management and installation of software on enterprise accounts is also handled differently than individual or team accounts.

Posted by: johnrobmooreHow much cheaper is FCPX when you factor in you must work on a Mac to use it. PCs are still cheaper and while iMacs are pretty reasonable in price they are still more than a comparable PC aren't they? The software isn't that much cheaper than Premiere Pro standalone is it. Oh wait you have to subscribe to Premiere so there's the extra cost. I guess the cost of the iMac over PC isn't as much as the annual subscription to Premiere would be. Does Adobe have special pricing for large install of a news room nature.
