I've got a year old iMac 20 inch. I'm finally adding a second monitor. I got a Mini Display Port to DVI Adapter connected to a DVI-D single link cable going into the DVI-D input. No picture but if I disconnect the DIV connector from the monitor the screen flashes to hook up a cable. Reconnecting the DVI connector and the screen prompt vanishes but the screen is black and eventually goes into power saving mode. I tried hitting the input button but nothing happens. If I use the same cable setup and plug it into a monitor we've been using for years on a 2006 iMac the picture pops up. I assume this means that the new monitor I purchased a year ago has a DVI-D input but it's probably wanting the analogue signals on the the 4 pins that are surrounding the long blade requiring a DVI-I Cable. This seems strange to me that a much newer monitor wouldn't be accessing the digital connections on the DVI-D cable. I suppose the monitor could be defective but it did display the onscreen warning when the cable is disconnected and it prompts that it's going to sleep mode when the cable is reinserted.
Are monitor manufacturers, in the case LG, so cheap they don't want to use the chip set necessary for the digital part of the DVI-D cable and are instead only accessing those analogue signal pins available on the DVI-I cables. The mini display port has all the pins but in the past I've seen adapters that didn't have those extra analogue pins and I ended up bending and ruining an adapter or 2.
