It’s an interesting development and I suspect there will be some who are very interested in the approach.
Don’t forget for a really big facility the 200 is insignificant compared to the cost of getting your fingers burnt when a major part of your post kit is deemed EOL as happened in the recent Apple FCP incident (well not that recent)
For the large broadcasters and bigger post houses there is some value in having an inside track on developments and assurances on product line and roadmaps.
Things that can’t be shared in the public domain but are key in planning your development.
I know FCP-X is improving all the time and the soon to be release 10.1 may well finally make it useful in some areas but however good it gets it’s still being managed by Apple and they have demonstrated that they pull the strings and can change the direction of a product (or even scuttle it) if they decide. And that’s not a supplier relationship any wants.
So is Adobe any better? Is subscription and internet connected systems the way forward? And who’s to say Adobe won’t drive down the cost and go the FCP-X route just after a large chunk of Post people climb aboard?
So the option to be in closer with the key NLE provider may well be an attractive proposition.
If they’d had Marianna head it up they would have been onto a real winner and it’s a real missed opportunity they didn’t do that. But it’s still interesting…
