You definitely went the right way unless you have to deliver 24. Adding frames to 24 is much smoother then taking frames out of 30.
Now, why you are getting jittery footage is another issue. It should be very smooth. When you look at the motion effect editor for one of the 24 frame clips in your 30 frame timeline what do you see? It should show you the source is progressive and the output is film with a 2:3 pulldown added.
If it shows that and the footage is jittery (not a very illuminating description), you might try changing the output to interlace and see what happens.
