[Avid-L2] Re: Dealing with duplicate clip naming with AVCHD cameras.

Hi Bouke:

I saw an older message somewhere about your software tool to rewrap AVCHD as Quicktime, which is why I was curious if anyone on the list had seen similar artifacting while using Clipwrap to do the same thing. I have only done a short test with Clipwrap, and while those clips play back with severe freezing (when brought in via AMA), I didn't see any issues with artifacts after transcoding them.

As for duplicate clip names, on Symphony 6.0.3, relinking a sequence to AMA clips only appears to look at clip name and timecode. (If you're just trying to relink AMA masterclips, I'm sure it pays attention to more stuff.)

So if you have 2 source clips (AMA'd from different directories) with identical names and overlapping timecodes, it's entirely possible to transcode, cut a sequence using both clips, relink back to original AMA files, and find your relinked sequence using just one of the files for all occurences of the duplicate/overlapping files in your timeline. In fact, if you turn on dupe detection in the timeline, it will show false dupe regions where the timecodes overlap between 2 AMA clips with the same name.

I see that v6.5 does include a wider variety of options for relinking, including using arbitrary bin columns instead of tapename/filename, which would make it fairly simple to work around the problem.

Cheers,
--Michael
