The biggest difference is the use of multiple cores to speed up the encoding. I did some tests on a HPXW8400 (dual, quad core)to create an H264 MP4 file using 2 pass VBR. Although I could see version 8 using all the cores to some degree, v8.5 seems much more efficient, maxing out all cores to about 95% during the first pass and about 70% on the second pass. I can also see that it initially creates eight temporary files before combining them to make one finished file. The upshot of all this is that to squeeze a 15 minute 1080i DNXHD file exported SAS out of Avid took nearly 4 times real-time with version 8 but only just over 1 times real-time with 8.5. I'm told there is also additional acceleration available if you have a CUDA based card (such as the Nvidia 2000 or 4000) but I didn't test this out.
