No embedded time code on Avid out unless it somehow comes from the actual source media. Vitc on the source can come through depending on how it was captured and a few other factors. I don't believe the vanc timecode from HD sources comes through. Really it's the sequence time code I want and that isn't on the output in an embedded form. When I monitor error logging off tape I have to increase the gamut tolerance to 1% or I get codec based errors on HDCam and HDCamSR. This makes error logging the tape output somewhat but not totally pointless. I prefer to run at 0% area tolerance on the Avid output slaving to Avid LTC. This way I know at least what I'm sending to the tape machine is clean and I don't have to account for what I'm told are the playback enhancement errors induced on HDCam and HDCamSR. I've had shows done by another editor that light up my scope like an Xmas tree even at the 1% threshold that still passed out of house QC. This leads me to believe not many QC houses are really running tight error logs. I'm not saying that's wrong because it just seems that the error logging flags too much stuff to be adhered to in everyday work. I rely on it because I have control of my world but the outside world is another story. As far as the I/O Express downconvert not being used for a digital cut I'd bet that's because of processing delay that might make the output to tape not frame accurate, but that's me guessing from past experience with Kona3s in the FCP world. First thing I'd do is run some time code burn in tests to see if and when I get an I/O express.
