So I went out at lunch and grabbed an Intuos 5 from National Office Supply Chain Named for Consumables. $229.
That's a deal at MacMall if you want a larger surface to work on.
I think this one is smaller than the Graphire I'm retiring but I like it better already; they've added this rotary control which mitigates the loss of a scroll wheel on the mouse. I've got it set to grow or shrink the timeline now. It will scroll normal windows on the PC but of course Avid's are all custom; I'll see if a page up/page down option is worth using but expect not.

I have 2's and 3's around the building, but like the 4 a lot. (Though I disable all those buttons on the side.) I use the pen and mouse alternately, though, depending on what I'm doing, I'm no longer just a pen-only guy. ( I don't like the wireless mouse on the intuos, that never even comes out of the box).

My hunch would be the multitouch capable ones might be good for the future, but I can also see somehow that being useless or worse, problematic, with Media Composer. I'm *not* looking at the Cintiqs as I freelance and need something that move easily with me.
