I'm sure you're right. I've never noticed it underneath the monitor
until now, since it is so prominent above it.
I have 'gang' mapped to my keyboard, so for me muscle memory is
unaffected, fortunately.
I would speculate that in the original design, the gang button was
separate because it was thought important to always have an visual
indication that the monitors were ganged, since it is such a big change
to how they normally behave. Now it is possible to remap something else
over the gang button, or hide one or both rows of buttons under the
monitor, which could leave no indication that you were in gang mode.
However, I see that the bottom of the monitor frame is now highlighted
green when gang is engaged -- don't remember seeing that in past
versions. So there is still always some visual indicator.
