Or are you working on a 16:9 project in the Avid and you're worried about your titles working for 4:3 when they end up being centercut?
Those are two very different problems.
In the first instance, it's all about luck and whether the initial post team PLANNED for 4:3 centercut. If they didn't plan for it, then chances are you will need to re-do all of the shots with "Chyron" on them. The only way to maintain aspect ratio AND keep titles in 4:3 centercut if they were DESIGNED ONLY for 16:9 is to shrink the entire picture down so that it is BOTH letterboxed AND maybe even pillarboxed too, resulting in a seriously small image, especially if someone then watches it on a 16:9 TV because then the letter/pillar image is probably going to be pillarboxed AGAIN. Bouke, (I think it was) suggests pan and scan, which could work, but would look pretty strange to see the right side of the text go off the screen and then slowly PAN across to reveal the rest of the text. I would say you would need to get every shot with a "Chyron" and re-do the CG on those shots.
If you're talking about the second instance, then it's very simple. Just design your text to fall within the 4:3 safe title area of the 16:9 screen and when the footage is centercut, the CG will look exactly the same shape, but both edges of the CG will just barely make it inside the 4:3 safe title in the centercut, where, in the 16:9 version, there will be plenty of space to the left and right of every title. If you watch the news on a 16:9 monitor/TV, you will see that this is the way that they do their titles: protecting for centercut.
