Re: [Avid-L2] Re: Canon D5, the solution is (nearly) there..

Guys,
I've updated QTchange.
It now does MetaCheater ALE output,
and it can extract the sound to BWF (with the same TC as in the ALE / QT,
upsample to 48.000 Khz and then do a pitch shift to stay sync.

(and it does a few other tricks too)

It's also available for Windows now.
(But i must admit i haven't done serious testing on Windows,)

Next in the pipeline is a way to sync BWF recorders (decent ones, not the
Zoom) to the Canon cams without Magic lantern.
(I'm personally a bit scared of it...)
My trick is to slave a laptop's clock to the BWF recorders output, and slave
the cam to that, or vice versa, slave the cam to the laptop, and have the
laptop output LTC to slave the BWF recorder.

To slave the Canon you can use Canons software, and it should work with
Nikon (and Nikon's software) as well.

But do toy with the QTchange application.

A bit from the manual:

If you have shot 30 FPS, and you want to edit in 29.97, you have a couple of
options:

1) Extract the audio to BWF while slowing it down by 0.1 % (stamp as 47952)

Delete the audio tracks. (This can be done in one pass in QT change)

Then in Avid, in the console, type IgnoreQTrate = True

After that, you can import the video files.

If you have audio in your video files, the IgnoreQTrate will have no effect!

2) Change the speed by setting 'interpret speed' to 30, and 'new speed' to
29.97

This will fool avid, and avid will assume the file was 29.97 in the first
place, all will be fine.

3) Work with an .ALE file

This is probably the best option, since then you also get a TapeName
attached to your files.

However, IgnoreQTrate = True is still a good idea!

If there is even a small miscalculation in the In and Out TC, and
IgnoreQTrate = False,

you will get skipped or double frames here and there.

This is very true for MetaCheater. MetaCheater is not able to set the
correct duration!

Qtchange however seems to do a better job,

BUT ONLY if you also change the playback speed to 29.97

(The duration calculated is based on TC, and the TC is only correct if the
duration matches as well)

If you have imported an .ale file, select all imported clips in the bin, go
to menu 'clip'

Choose 'Batch Import'. Avid will not know the location of the files to be
imported!

So do a 'select all' on the red colored clips, and press 'Locate'.

Avid will ask you to locate one of the files.

Pick the right one, and Avid will find the rest of the clips by itself.

For importing the BWF, in the import dialogue, go to 'options' pick the
audio Tab.

There, make sure you have set it right to import the audio with speed
changes!
