[Avid-L2] Consulting Don'ts

Here's a list from TechRepublic of things not to do on a consulting job. I think they apply well to our line of work, too, particularly if you're freelance. Most are common sense, but that seems to have flown out the window lately. I've seen some of these violated recently. Replace "consultant" with "editor", or "employee" with "client".

1: Ridicule another consultant's work
Nothing can make you look more unprofessional than mocking someone
else' work.

2: Make deals you aren't authorized to make
3: Take shortcuts
Band-Aids are fine if you know you are coming back to
make a more permanent fix.
4: Book time spent socializing
Make sure you bill the client only for the time you actually work.
5: Act like employees are in your way
Even if you are working in a
small space, remember that you are the invader — not them.
6: Flirt
7: Engage in political or religious discussions
8: Leave without explaining what you've done
9: Fail to document
10: Refuse to listen to employees' needs
