[Avid-L2] Running 7 streams of multigroup with Nexus 2 bonded 1GB ethernet connections?

 

According to the Isis 7K performance guide going beyond 6 streams of DNX_145 in a multigroup clip requires 10 Gig connectivity.  I've talked to a very savvy engineer who said 7 streams should work fine and even if there are a few dropped frames while playing the 9 way with the 7 streams it doesn't really hamper the editing in the shows he done this with.  I've also talked to an Avid Isis Engineer who did the math in his head over a phone call and said we should be okay with 7 streams.  I didn't question him at the time about what the performance guide says but now our VAR specing the install is questioning if it will work so we are doing more research. 

I'm no San Server specialist but the question I have is that those who are concerned are sighing the Client Bandwidth not that of the Nexus or Isis.  I'm assuming in the case of bonded 1GB ethernet connectivity that the two onboard ethernet connections available on our MacPro 5.1 towers are what will be used.  Is that the normal way to hook things up or is there a need for an extra ethernet card or one of those usb to ethernet adapters?  If in fact the nexus is hooked up through the dual onboard ethernet ports on the MacPro is there any internal deficiencies in the Apple architecture that would make using both ports for the Nexus connection problematic.  I'm thinking of what I've read in the past about how sometimes what seem like different connections on the Mac Tower are all tied to the same internal buss.  I'm specifically remembering how the DNA Adrenaline Firewire connection could be the only thing connected to the mac's on board firewire connections as both the front and back firewire connections were hooked to the same buss and interacted to mess up the DNA performance.  As if DNA need any help with messed up performance?  I don't think that ethernet works the same way but I'm trying to ask just in case.      

My gut says things will work okay based on all the people I've talked with but the proof is in the pudding.  I've also pointed out that if it really is a problem down the line we can always switch over to 10 gig connection.  They have run Cat 6 to the bays and the runs are well under 100 feet so IIRC that should still support 10 gig ethernet connectivity.  I also pointed out to make sure the switch they choose be expandable and also versatile so if need a port can go from 1GB to 10GB with a change of the SFP and a configuration tweak.  I know that different switches have different degrees of flexibility in this regard so I warned them to ask up front to make sure we have no surprises down the line.  Am I correct that there are certain Nexus switches that allow for a given port to be either 1 GB or 10 GB depending on the SFP and switch configuration?  I asked this of the Avid Isis Engineer and he said yes depending on the model of switch.  So many little details to bite us in the arse.
