Actually, if you go to the COW FCPX site, a recurring theme is the sheer speed of the software. I can personally attest to that. Everything is at your fingertips. I absolutely feel I am cutting at a much more efficient rate than the other systems I have cut on. The trick for most older editors in X is to try and forget about what you know about track-based systems.
Now all that said, I don't work on long-form multi-editor projects. I am a spot and short form cutter so your mileage may vary. It ain't perfect by far, but it's powerful, fast and a lot of fun to cut on.
