As a disclaimer I've known Grant and Pete since the 80s, worked with
them and for them - they are very smart guys and won't buy Avid for
nostalgia alone - if Avid is even for sale.
As much as we would love BMD to turn Avid into the success Resolve is
there is a lot more competition in the editorial area than in grading
though in my opinion Avid is as strong a leader as Resolve was in its
field. The difference is Avid is already a software company now, Davinci
was a hardware business until BMD turned it around and made it a
software company. I doubt there is the same upside in taking Avid over
that there was in Davinci.
Having said that it does sit in a solid place in the BMD line up as the
offline segment feeding their online grading and vfx offerings and
protools would slot right in there too....
That's only if there's solid upside, BMD don't buy companies for fun
they do their homework and they make them efficient.
