[Avid-L2] Re: In case you wondered why Avid can't afford to...

Pro Tools is a more desirable product in the audio world than Media Composer is in the video world. So it might actually survive well on its own. However, they are both product lines that appeal mainly to pro users. Resolve is not a good craft editor and  trying to have everything in one box isn't a successful strategy. OTOH, they could position Media Composer as a good craft editor and turn Resolve into the finishing tool.

From what I hear, the server/storage side of Avid is far more valuable than the software tools to the bottom line. Naturally you'd want the software tools if you buy their storage and servers, but it's not a prerequisite. So there could be a scenario in which the Media Composer line is sold to someone, Pro Tools is spun off and Avid continues as a server/storage company.

Regarding BMD, remember that they don't buy companies purely to have a product it can bring to market. That's part of it, but in the process of these acquisitions, they also acquire a lot of intellectual property, which can be used in many different ways. For example, when they picked up Resolve, they also picked up Revival, which they have yet to aggressively market, nor come out with a Mac or Windows version. When they bought Cintel, they picked up more than just scanner/telecine hardware.

Honestly, it's often hard to make sense out of why BMD makes the moves they do, so to put traditional business logic into the equation is probably a fool's errand.  :)
