With Symphony color correction,"update" works within the sequence. For example, you apply a "source clip name" color correction to a series of shots, then you add some more shots from that same "source clip name". They of course don't have the correction applied. Update should add the correction to the newly added shots.
"Merge" on the other hand works between sequences. Load the target sequence in the record timeline, and the older sequence in the source monitor. When you merge corrections it takes the corrections used in the sequence in the source side and applies them to the record side.
