I got the following helpful reply from Dennis Mahoney at Avid:
Hi Mike,
I saw your post on the Avid-L about compatibility between Media Composer 8.4 and 8.3. We have tested backwards compatibility between the two and testing went well. We do have an update for 8.4.x coming at the end of the month that addresses a number of issues found internally and in the field. The current build is 8.4.2.
