Re: [Avid-L2] Re: an HDR OLED is in my future!

I have to agree on Atmos.  I've been in a number of well-designed Atmos rooms, with optimized content, and the experience is only marginally more immersive that a good quality 7.4 surround room.

And except for the possibility of virtualization, I don't see Atmos gaining any traction in the home market, except for an exceedingly tiny percentage of dedicated and deep-pocketed home theater aficionados.

Purely anecdotally, I saw "Inside Out" in DolbyVision and Atmos at the El Capitan over in Hollywood. Truth be told, in spite of the dangling trusses all packed with speakers, the El Cap is not the best acoustic demo for Atmos (and to be clear, I've seen a lot of Atmos films in venues around town, and the benefit is, in my humble opinion, negligible).

All this said, the image was stunning, all DolbyVisioned up. This said, Pixar-style animation generally fares very well in a digital projection environment, and the DolbyVision assist only made it all the more spectacular. I'd love to see both film-originated and digital-originated material in DolbyVision, and, as Terry suggests, it seems likely that I won't have to wait all that long.

I don't believe SMPTE has approved one yet. they do have the DolbyVision under submission.

Based on real world examples, I am betting on Dolby right now. As of last NAB, Dolby was showing WB movies graded for HDR, streaming over VUDU on (not yet shipping) Vizio HDR sets. That is an existing pipeline. Also, our local cinema has converted one theater to DolbyVision / Atmos. To me, this indicates that Dolby will become the standard.

And they are motivated. Their audio patents are running out so they need new licensing schemes.
