Then the question remains, why does this not work on Win?
Windows MC CAN consolidate ProRes files. (Thus, write OPAtom MXF)
And, it CAN export a 'same as source' ProRes QT.
It just can't render to ProRes, nor mixdown.
 
Why not? Is this a legal thing? (I very much doubt there is a technical reason.)

Since v6 MC on the Mac can create OPAtom MXF ProRes encoded media and export a Same as Source QT file using the ProRes codec.

To export a Same as Source QT, QT will still need to be installed but it's not being used for the transcode. It's the transcode step that introduces the gamma shift issues.
