Re: [Avid-L2] "Splitter: bad or missing smpte info" Error on Xcode Proxy generation for QT file

We finally passed our QC of the file.  I used the ProRes Mixdown approach but I found out the Xcode issue was actually being created by the captioning facility.  On the last Test where I finally did the ProRes mixdown and a Save As from the QT Ref the Caption facility used MacCaption to just add captions to my file and then they used MacCaption to create a new file, which is how they were creating the previous failing test files.

The file they just added captioning to passed and the newly created file did not pass and generated the Xcode error.  So this leads me to believe my middle test file that was an audio only QT Ref Saved As in QT Pro to a self contained 12 mono stem .mov and then a Video QT Ref Exported to ProRes in QT Pro for a self contained video file .mov would have worked after I combined the two in QT Pro had it not been for the Captioning facility creating a new file as opposed to just adding Captioning to the file.

I think Santa needs to bring me a Cinedeck for Xmas but I don't think I can wait that long.  ;-)

Here's how we use MacCaption:

MacCaption generates both an .scc file (which is a separate network deliverable for us) and an AAF file.
The AAF file gets dropped into the data track in the Avid timeline.
We render out an OP1a file for delivery, which includes the captions.

In your case I'd guess that your captioning vendor imports your file into Avid, then re-exports a new file w. captions.  I can't see how they can "add captions" to your file without totally unpacking it into audio and video files first.

So after all my hoops the 12 audio mono stem issue is resolved but now we are getting an error at the network when they use XCode for a proxy generation.  The message is, "Splitter: bad or missing smpte info".  They day they sometimes get errors when there is some DNX media mixed in with the ProRes file.  Given the entire video track is ProResHQ 422 I don't see how there is any element of DNX in the file.  Is there any chance the audio tracks that were exported as QT Ref from avid then "Saved As" to create a self contained .mov with 12 mono stems could somehow be flagged as DNX?  I don't see how given they are audio but I clearly don't see the whole picture here.

The food chain is the file I create then goes to a facility that inserts the Captioning into the file.  I believe they use Mac Caption.  So far on our test files the captions have not been working for the network.  Now I'm not sure how captions get inserted into the file.  Does it somehow just insert some header information/metadata to the existing file or does it back out a new file in the process?

I can only think that we should send our raw file to the network for testing to eliminate that as a source for the new error "Splitter: bad or missing smpte info".  It was noted that the original file we sent with the interleaved audio did not exhibit this error when run through XCode proxy generation.  I am not familiar with XCode's inner workings either.  Can anyone shed some light on this?
